dir 615 E4 stream problems
« on: November 21, 2012, 11:37:12 PM »

Hi all!
I've got recently this DIR 615 E4.
It's working well except I can't listen music (di.fm) and watch hd video (youtube) it freezing on 2-3 sec every 5 sec, no matter connected by wi-fi or wire to the router.
Only working configuration is:
WAN port speed: 10Mbps
Enable Multicast Streams: checked
Enable UPnP: unchecked

But I have 40mb internet access and I want use it for full.

Could anyone explain me how to make streaming working on  "WAN port speed: 100Mbps".
"WAN port speed: auto" - not helping as well.

Other info:
Firmware: DIR615E4_FW511RUB05beta01.bin   15-May-2012 12:37   3.4M
QoS is turning of ( if it on - the same problem)

Thx.

Link>Welcome!

What region are you located?
Are you wired or wireless connected to the router?
Has a Factory Reset been performed?

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.
Double NAT
To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged.
If the modem can't be bridged then see if the modem has a DMZ option and input the IP address the router gets from the modem and put that into the modems DMZ.

Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1.
Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking. Disable uPnP for testing Port Forwarding rules.

WAN Port Speed should be set to automatic depending on what the WAN Port speed is supported by the ISP modem. Older modems only supported 10Mb, most newer ones support 100Mb and most resent modems support 1000Mb. I don't think the 615 supports 1000Mb and is maxed at 100Mb.

Link>Wireless Installation Considerations
What wireless modes are you using? Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
Try single mode G or N or mixed G and N?
Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
Try setting a manual channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear.
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto.
What wireless devices do you have connected?
Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use InSSIDer to find out. How many?
Turn off WISH, and WPS under Advanced.
Try turning off Short GI, WLAN Partition, and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.
Enable WMM Enable Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.
Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

Thx for replay.
About your questions:
I'm from Russia, Moscow.
I'm connected to the router both wire(pc) and wi-fi(tablet).
Factory reset was performed by me, also I installed latest (beta) firmware from
ftp.dlink.ru/pub/Router/DIR-615/Firmware/RevE/beta/
My ISP is smile-net.ru
I don't have any ISP modem and connect the router direct to wire, this wire I believe goes to a switch or smth.
My ISP WAN speed is 40mbps/40mbps

I turned off QoS.
I set WAN Port Speed to auto mode.
I turned on Multicast Streams.

But steel I have freezes in stream HD video and stream music. (For ex. from youtube and di.fm...)

In the same time if I set up WAN Port Speed in the router to 10 mbps then problem is no more, but it fourfold slower then my ISP speed. I really want to use full speed beside streams.
Another words how to make router normally stream hd video and do not limit my WAN speed?

Thx.

He problem maybe that your ISP speed on the WAN Line is too slow. I think you need at least 100Mb for some streaming abilities. Seems like thats the bottleneck slow down.

My ISP speed is 40mbps and its good and stable when it connected direct to the PC.
I tested very same HD video from youtube in 4 conditions
1. w\o router - works perfect
2. with router and WAN port speed: auto - video freezes every 3 seconds
3. with router and WAN port speed: 100mbps - video freezes every 3 seconds
4. with router and  WAN port speed:10 mbps - works perfect again

And the question again why this router normally streaming video on "WAN port speed" setting sated to 10 mbps only?

I would contact your ISP and ask them what the supported ISP WAN connection speed is where this router is connected too. Not sure why 100Mb or Auto isn't working. Could be that the router has a problem. If it does, I would contact Level 2 or higher support with DLink.

Let us know how it goes.

I would test this out on a different ISP if you can, say at a friends or families place? See if the problem follows, if it does, then possible this router needs to be RMAd to DLink.

It could also be the MTU value thats causing streaming problems. Download TCP Optimizer and check the MTU value that is most optimal for your ISP. Then enter the same value in your router (Home > Internet > Manual Internet Settings > DHCP Internet Connection Type). My router had an MTU value of 1500 (which is the default value) while the optimal value for my ISP was 1300.
