Connection loss

So I have a DIR-655 Rev: A4 running 1.33 firmware.  I have had it for about 3 or so years.  No problems, awesome router until about two days ago it starts acting up.  It will lose connection, reboot and reconnect in a matter of seconds to a minute.  Something along the lines of:

WAN connection cable has been disconnected
WAN connection cable has been connected
Bringing up WAN using DHCP.

This only happens when there is a ton of traffic on the network.  TS going, a game, several devices on wireless.  I have tried several things, changing the WAN port speed from auto to 1000 then to 100.  I plugged in a another router to my modem and I didn't see any connection drops, but I also used a different ethernet cable.  So I then used that same cable back to the dlink and didn't have any drops for a day or so. Then I start getting some heavy traffic and bam it's dropping again.

The only thing I know that has changed recently in my network is about a month or so ago there was a really bad storm.  I either got a surge or some lightning or something cause I saw a spark and my NIC in my computer died.  I first thought it was the router but I replaced the NIC and everything was fine.  I don't know if it finally caught up to the router and is now acting up and I need to replace it or what.

I'm stumped.  Thanks in advance for the help!

What region are you located?

Has a Factory Reset been performed?

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.
Double NAT
To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged.
If the modem can't be bridged then see if the modem has a DMZ option and input the IP address the router gets from the modem and put that into the modems DMZ.

Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1.
Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking. Disable uPnP for testing Port Forwarding rules.

WAN Port Speed set to Auto or specific speed? Some newer ISP modems support 1000Mb so manually setting to Gb speeds can be supported by the router. Advanced/Advanced Networking/WAN Port Speed

What wireless modes are you using? Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
Try single mode G or N or mixed G and N?
Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
Try setting a manual channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear.
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto.


Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use InSSIDer to find out. How many?

Turn off WISH, and WPS under Advanced.
Try turning off Short GI, WLAN Partition,and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.
Enable WMM Enable Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

Yes I did a factory reset when the problems started.
ISP: Mediacom
ISP Modem: Scientific Atlanta DPC2100R2 - Standalone (It was my previous modem with Cox)

Wireless mode: Mixed N and G
Channel Width: I had it on auto but switched it 20mhz trying to correct the problem.
Channel set to auto.
Security mode: WPA2 (TKIP and AES)

Yes there are cordless house phones.  Have had them for awhile.
Yes there is a handful of wireless routers in the area.  My computer isn't wireless so I know it's not just the wireless acting up.

I have tried all of the above suggestions and nothing has worked.

Does this happen if you directly connect to the ISP modem?

If your on cable, I would first make sure the ISP service, lines and signal are good going into the modem. If there are t.v. line splitters, they can reduce the signal. It's recommended to not use them or if you do need to, use 1 good quality one.

Have the ISP check the logs to see if there is any issues on the ISP modem and on there logs during this time frame when you seem that you can't get connected.

If this happens over wired and wireless, could be something upstream from the router. When this happens can you still access the 655s web page? I would also test with the WiFi turned OFF on the 655 and see if the problem happens again. I would test with ALL devices, phones and such turned off with only one PC or laptop connected.

Swap cables between the ISP modem and router. CAT5E or 6 is recommended.

As last resort, maybe upgrade FW. Lets try a bit more trouble shooting first.

No it doesn't drop when connected to the modem directly.  The first thing I did when the problem started was to contact Mediacom and ask them what was going on.  The tech said they didn't see any connection drops.

Yes I can still access the 655s web page.  I tested with WiFi off and it still disconnected.  And I am using a different cat5e cable.

I am unsure which FW is for my revision.

I updated the firmware and that didn't help.  So I switched to another router and still had the problem. Turns out it was my modem.  Got a new modem and no more problems.  Thanks for your help!
