DIR-655 and Ooma Telo Help Needed
« on: November 29, 2012, 06:40:24 PM »

Currently my setup is cable modem/ooma telo/dir-655 router.  I experience very poor internet response and frequently the ooma reboots. The call quality is good.  I've had this issue for a long time. I need better response times. Comcast was out and checked everything. I called ooma and they wanted me to try changing the setup to cable modem/router/ooma.  I spent a lot of time with the ooma support people but I cannot get this type of configuration to work at all.  They tell me the router isn't allowing the connection but they don't have specific knowledge on the router to help me anymore. Does anyone have a procedure to accomplish this setup?

Some specifics:
Comcast is the ISP
Cable Modem is Arris WMB760

Try putting the OOMAs IP address it gets from the DIR-655 in the DIR-655s DMZ.

ISP Modem>DIR-655<DMZ>OOMA.

DMZ on the DIR-655 is under Advanced/Firewall/DMZ.

Thanks for your advice. I have tried that, and many other hints/procedures that I've seen on this forum and the Ooma forum.  When I connect the Ooma Telo after the router, it seems like the router cannot detect the Telo.  It doesn't show listed as a DHCP client and the Telo doesn't report getting an IP address and I don't get any lights on the front of the router showing a connection and the lights on the Telo Internet port do not light.  I've done cable swaps and tried every port on the router. I'm thinking there's something wrong with the Telo. Ooma is graciously sending me another Telo to swap out and try.  Funny thing, I've reset all the Telo settings back to factory and also did a reset and all my router settings are back to the original but now the Telo will not connect using the cable/telo/router setup.  It's disconnected now and I'm giving the Telo a break. Maybe after it cools down it may feel like cooperating.  When I get the new Telo in a few days, hopefully that will fix the issue.

Does the OOMA have a web management page by chance? If it does, check to see if you can manually input an IP, Subnet and Gateway addresses, If so maybe you can get it working that way. It does sound like something is wrong with the OOMA, IF your getting addressing on other devices and not the OOMA, I presume thats where the fault lies.

Keep us posted.

Yeah, I did try setting up a manual static IP address in the Ooma setup page. I followed all the advice I saw here and elsewhere to a "T". Still didn't work.  Since my last post, the Telo finally connected after giving it a real long "break" so I'm back to having working phones and not so good internet response. Besides from trying lots of different advice with no success, one thing I forgot to mention earlier was that months ago the wife tells me Ooma was "dead". I went to check it out and sure enough the Telo wouldn't power up.  Before I buy anything new I try to fix stuff, so I pulled out my multimeter and found that the adapter plug had died. I went to Radio Shack and found a plug I could adjust to the proper settings and the Telo worked ever since.  I didn't lose anything else, and like probably everyone, I have stuff plugged in all over my office, so I don't think it was surge, I thought it was good foreign manufacturing, but maybe it was a surge???

Anything is possible. Hope fully the new OOMA will work well. Again, if it works connected to the 655 and gets and IP address, put it in the DMZ. It should work well over that.

Keep us posted.

An Update: The replacement Ooma modem arrived. I installed it behind the 655. I knew things looked promising when the lights on the front of the router lit for that port.  I resereved the IP address for the Ooma, I put it in the DMZ of the router, and I gave that top priority in the QoS settings. Everything was up and running properly within 15 minutes.

I want to thank everyone for all the posts that I've read. These forums are great.
