Hi all,

i have some questions about DNS-320.
My config is standard, 2*2TB (1 WD Caviar green, 1 seagate barracuda)

WD is my first HD with 1,8TB (NTFS)
Seagate is a new one

Now all my data are on Seagate (Format Seagate in DNS-320, move all data with usb backup function (40 hours !!), format WD)

1- Is it possible to rename drives (actually vaolume_1 and volume_2)
    I wish to call them "Parents" and "Childs"
2- What's the best way to transfer data from vol1 to vol2 ? I need to transfer about 800Go
    Windows Explorer ?
    Web File Server ?
    FTP ?
3- When i browse the drives with FTP client Filezilla i see the same content on 2 drives. But actually only 1 drive is full, the second is empty. Why ?

Navigate to Applications > Local Backup and configure a recurring incremental backup between the two Volumes.

Did you accidentally configure the HDDs as RAID-1? If you log into the Web UI and navigate to Management > System Status > System Info > Volume Information, what are the values for Volume Type and Used Space for Volume_1 and Volume_2?

- launch it
- When backup is finished I delete the task and Child's data in parent's HDD

No, all seems ok :

But I've find the problem.
In Management --> Account Management --> Network Shares
FTP info for vol1 was :
Share Name :   Volume_1
Path :   Volume_2

and for vol2
Share Name :   Volume_2
Path :   Volume_2

Maybe it's due to a problem I've faced of today :
I was unable to format second HDD while first one was still inside DNS-320.
So i was obliged to remove Disk 1, format Disk 2 and then re-plug Disk 1.
And Vol1 became Vol2  ....

I've clicked on "Reset Network Shares", reconfigured and all is OK.

One issue you may encounter is that the incremental backup only copies files from the parent HDD to child HDDs that either changed or are new.  If a file is deleted from the parent HDD, it won't be deleted from the child.  This will result in the child HDD (i.e. backup) becoming incrementally larger than the parent HDD over time.  Performing a scheduled full backup is not a preferable solution, as this will wear-out your HDDs and take considerable time with large volumes of data.

A compromise is to use the DNS-320 onboard incremental backup and perform monthly syncing using a third party product on a client PC that will delete files from the child that are no longer in the parent.  I use a product called syncback for this function.

maybe i was not enough clear.

I just want to transfer data one time. Because actually only one HDD contain all data, the second one is empty.

After i will upload parent's data to parent's HDD and child's data to child's HDD

Understand now. Thought that after the initial upload to the parent, you were looking to maintain a scheduled backup from the parent to the child so you have a synced copy of your data.

As far as I know you can't change the default name for the root of each drive so you are just going to have to remember which is which.

The volume name is tied to the DNS-320 slot. If you were to the HDD in slot-1 to slot-2, it's name would change from Volume_1 to Volume_2.
