WLAN LED stopped blinking after setting Network Filter MAC rules
« on: December 05, 2012, 10:59:19 AM »

When the front-panel WLAN LED light is solid, it indicates that the wireless segment is ready; it blinks during actual wireless data transmission.
This is how it behaved for me until I added some MAC addresses to Advanced > Network Filter. Now it stays solid even during wireless data transmission. Even after a reboot.
Is this normal? If not, how do I get the blinking back?

Link>Welcome!
What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on routers web page under status.
What region are you located?

What happens if you disable Network filters? Doe the Wireless LED start blinking again?

^ From router login:

Product Page: DIR-655, Hardware Version: B1, Firmware Version: 2.00NA

Status > Device info > General:
Firmware Version: 2.00NA , Wed, 12, May, 2010

I'm in North Carolina, USA. (Curious, what would my region have to do with it?)

If I disable the Network Filter, the WLAN LED light still stays solid during Wi-Fi activity, even after a reboot.

This all happened right after I first ever set my MAC filters. I observed the blinking right before I did it.

Region has nothing to do with your issue however we need to know what region so we can make a correct suggestion on what FW version to use. There are different FW versions for each region, NA, EU and places like that. Rev also matters since there are 2 different Revs. You have Rev B.

You are using shipping FW which is out of date. If the unit is working with and with out Networking Filters applied and your only concern is the WiFi LED, you could use it as is. If your wanting to see activity for Wifi, you could upgrade to v2.07 and see if this fixes it. I don't recommend using v2.10 at this time as it has one bug we found in Guest Zone.

If you decide to upgrade, use the following:
FW Update Process
Factory reset, upgrade, factory reset once more then set up the router from scratch.

Let us know how it goes.

Would loading my saved config cut it? (I have one from right before I set the MAC filtering.)

No, Do not reload your saved configuration file after the update please. Re-configure the router from scratch.

OK, I got the D-Link DIR-655 rev B1 firmware 2.07NA installed:

– Restored factory default
– Uploaded 2.07 firmware to router over Ethernet cable
– Restored factory default
– Set up from scratch manually

That brought back the blinking WLAN LED, even after adding some MAC addresses to Advanced > Network Filter.

But now the Internet LED stays solid blue, whereas it blinked under firmware 2.0.0 when the corresponding light on my cable modem blinked. Is that normal now? Did it change with one of the firmware updates? In any event, none of the firmware updates' change descriptions since 2.0.0 made a peep about either fixing a broken WLAN LED or changing the behavior of the Internet LED.

The user manual says, "Internet LED – A solid light indicates connection on the Internet port. This LED blinks during data transmission. A solid blue light indicates that there is an Internet connection, an orange light indicates that there is none."

They shouldn't change this kind of stuff just because they feel like it. The user manual says one thing, and it does another.

What does your Internet LED do during activity?

I believe my WAN LED blinks for me.
Could be possible interaction between your ISP modem link and the router.
What ISP modem do you have? Make and model?

Glad the update go your WiFi LED blinkin again.

I have a Motorola SURFboard SB5101U DOCSIS 2.0 Cable Modem.
But my modem didn't change; my D-Link DIR-655 firmware did. The D-Link's Internet LED blinked under firmware 2.0.0, but not under 2.07. Since you say that yours blinks, I guess the firmware update didn't change that. (I've got a sneaking suspicion that inasmuch as the WLAN LED blinking stopped abruptly, had I updated with 2.0.0 again, it very well may have restored the blinking, too; maybe something got corrupted.) Not sure what you're getting at with "possible interaction between my ISP modem link and the router" — is there anything I can test?

My modem is a Motorola SB 6120 and 6180. There could be differences between the 5 Series and 6 Series and interaction of the FW.
What cable are you using? I use CAT6 between my routers and modems. Also I manually set WAN port speed to 1000Mb since the SB 6 series supports Gb speeds.

I would not worry about it. Is your router working for you?

Yeah, the router works OK, other than these two front panel lights suddenly changing behavior today. Changing the cable makes no difference, and, besides, the lights worked fine before.

(I had an all-in-one Motorola SBG6580 for a couple of days, but replaced it with my present dedicated SB5101U when I found out the hard way that the bastards at Time-Warner disable the built-in Wi-Fi unless you pay them a monthly "Wi-Fi fee." Grrrrrr.... Know anybody who wants to buy my white elephant SBG6580?)

wow, thats a shame. I've heard TW playing hard ball.

Can you still use it as an ISP modem? I would give it another go. WiFi isn't needed since the 655 is doing that. Use it as a ISP modem only.

One thing I would do if you want to sell that 6580, I would make sure that WiFi can be used and the modem can be accessed by other perspective buyers. Motorola SB modems web pages can and should be open for access by the user/owner. Would be interesting to see how it works though. I think it's like my 6180, just with WiFi built in and a router I think.

^ Oh yeah, the SBG6580's Wi-Fi works, and I can access the modem's web-based config over Wi-Fi just fine — and I corroborated elsewhere that Time-Warner disables that stuff in many, but not all, market regions in the U.S.

No, I can't use the SBG6580 with the DIR-655 (and besides, I've already bought the stand-alone SB5101U): Time-Warner additionally disables without recourse the ability of an all-in-one device (cable modem/Wi-Fi router/Ethernet switch) to set one's own preferred DNS servers (e.g., Google's, OpenDNS'). I guess forcing one to use the Time-Warner DNS servers is what at least partially will allow them to implement the upcoming doing-the-content-providers'-jobs-for-them mandate.

I've had this DIR-655 for a few days now, and in addition to the two front-panel lights that haven't been working correctly, I'm now noticing some flaky behavior in the web-based config, such as the list of my active DHCP clients is often incomplete in the popup menus of Advanced > Network Filter.

Are all the DIR-655s like this, or is it just mine? Maybe I've got a lemon. It's a DIR-655/RE refurb I bought as "New" off Amazon, and came in a brown box with the refurb seal over the flap.

Ok, just making sure about the 6580. I presume TW is the only ISP in your area? I think I would find a more open ISP if it were me.  ::) You might want to hold on to it for a bit to see how your ISP options goes. Unless you can find someone to trade it for a SB 6121, 6141 or 6180.  ::)

Hmm, Ya, RE means refurb so it's not new. Any return to Amazon available? I think I'm going to recommend you either return it and go with something NEW thats not a refurb. All these little problems are not what is seen on my 655 and presume others. I don't think this unit has been actually refurbished by DLink. Probably just basic testing by someone whom sold it to you and called it RE maybe. If you can't return it, I would get on the phone to DLink and ask them if they can do a REAL RMA for it. Tell them what we've done.

IF you can return it to Amazon, I would recommend either finding a 655 that is new else where or if you can't find a NEW 655, I would recommend trying a DIR-645 or 657 if your only looking for 2.4Ghz WiFi. If your considering 5Ghz as well, then please review the DIR-857, 827, 826L, 825, or 835 routers for this. I would recommend the DIR-865L however it maybe have additional features that you may or may not need at this time. I managed to get one on sale on Cyber Monday.  ;D

Let us know how it goes.
