DIR 826l Slow ping to router over wired connection
« on: December 08, 2012, 07:38:05 AM »

I have a wired connected iMac to the 826l router and the ping is way to slow and erratic for this kind of connection. It varies between 1.000 and 10.000 ms with an average around 4.500 ms. Even with no other clients connected to the router things don't get better.

I've upgraded firmware to 1.02 but no change.

With my old Dl 524 router I had constant 0.780 ms ping times.

Any thoughts with this issue?

Link>Welcome!
What region are you located?
What OSX version are you running?
Has a Factory Reset been performed both before and after the FW update?
Disable any security SW while testing?

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.
Double NAT
To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged.
If the modem can't be bridged then see if the modem has a DMZ option and input the IP address the router gets from the modem and put that into the modems DMZ.

Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1.
Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking. Disable uPnP for testing Port Forwarding rules.
WAN Port Speed set to Auto or specific speed? Some newer ISP modems support 1000Mb so manually setting to Gb speeds can be supported by the router. Advanced/Advanced Networking/WAN Port Speed

Does this happen if you disable or turn OFF the WiFi radios?

Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Link> Cat6 is recommended.

I'm from Romania.
OSX 10.7.5
I did it after FW update, but I've just installed the router for the first time the day before anyway.
I ain't running any security SW. Anyway, I'm getting great ping times with my old router, so it's not from my iMac.

I think the ISP is irrelevant in this case because I did the following test: took the cable out from the wan port and left the router connected to my iMac only (no cable/dsl modem involved). I ran a ping test to 192.168.0.1 from OSX Terminal's command line and the times were still fluctuating from 1.000 to 10.000 ms. I've changed 3 different cables (one of them being the blue one included in the 826l box) and the results had been identical. I've also tried all other suggestions from you.

Any other thoughts? Maybe the router suffered a shock during transportation (I've bought it online from amazon.com). What do you say?

Thanks,

Serban

Sounds like you've narrowed it down to the router since you disconnected the router from the ISP modem and tested with just the MAC and Router. Does disabling SPI help by chance?

If after all this, I would return the unit to Amazon or RMA the unit to DLink.

Let us know how it goes.

SPI was disabled all the time, so I guess you're right, that's it.

I would return it too, but the shipment might be too expensive to bother. I'll try to get help from the local D-Link technical support.

I'll let you know how it goes.

Thanks a lot!

Not yet. I didn't bother much last month due to holidays time. I've only emailed D-Link Romania for support but didn't get a reply. I'll try harder this month and keep you posted :)

I highly recommend using the phone to contact DLink support. Level 2 or higher if you ask.
