DNS 325 and RAID 1?
« on: December 11, 2012, 05:36:18 AM »

Hi, I just purchased a DNS-325 a couple of weeks ago, I am using two WD-RED 2TB drives.  I am trying to set up RAID 1 format.  I am running Windows 7.  I recently updated to firmware 1.3.  I consider myself to have above average skills with tinkering with PC's and installing hardware/software etc.

My question is, when I go through the setup wizard and select RAID 1, it formats volume_1 only.  It does not format volume_2.  Also, in Windows explorer, I can only see volume_1 as an available drive.  I do not see volume_2 anywhere as an available drive.

In the D-Link software for the NAS, if I go under the disk management tab, I only see the following:

Current RAID type - Volume_1   : RAID 1(Completed)

In the D-Link software for the NAS, if I go under the system status tab, I see the following (both drives):

Right

WDC

WD20EFRX-68AX9N0

WD-WMC300410713

30°C / 86°F

2000 GB

Normal
Left

WDC

WD20EFRX-68AX9N0

WD-WMC300410571

29°C / 84°F

2000 GB

Normal

Since the DNS-325 did not format volume_2, and I don't see it anywhere, I wonder whether or not I have successfully setup a RAID 1 configuration.  Or, is this the nature of RAID 1, that it only shows the one drive that has the data on it, and the drive which is mirroring does not show up, to prevent someone from writing data to it?

I have done a lot of searching on this problem and I can't seem to find a solution anywhere.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

ps.  yes this is my first post! :0)

RAID 1 mirrors Drive 1 to 2, you will never see drive 2 "by itself" again.

When I set mine up it took me a couple of reboots and factory settings resets before the format changed both drives to the same mode.

Also, I have a vague memory that after drive 1 is formatted, the device chugged away over night to copy drive 1's (empty) contents over to drive 2.

Do you recall ever seeing that volume_2 was formatted?

I never saw that volume_2 was formatted.

To be honest, I have no idea whether or not my drive is in fact mirroring or not to volume_2.

Is there any way to verify it is working?

I haven't ever seen Volume_2 either. I've been using RAID1 since day 1. You can see your RAID set status in System Status screen, bottom section
Code: [Select]
Volume Information
Volume Name Volume_1
Volume Type RAID 1
Sync Time Remaining Completed
Sync Time Remaining=Completed means the set is in sync.

thank you so much for your help!

Under "System Status" "System Info" "Volume INformation" it says "sync time remaining - completed."  So I assume that it is working properly.

Thanks again!

Sorry for hijack the thread, but i have the same problem. I fist had only 1 HDD install in DNS-325 used as "Standard", then just bought a new HDD and installed in the DNS-325. Went through process of format new HDD as RAID1, rebooted. After reboot, logge in, and DNS-325 still say Volume: Standard instead of raid 1. any idea to correct this problem? did i miss anything?
