Ok so I have a new DNS345 and I want to take an existing drive from my DNS325 and put it into my new DNS345 without reformatting, etc.

How can this be done?
Currently when I put the drive into slot 1 it will see it only if I go to do a smart scan so it knows its in the slot but how do I get it setup as volume 1.  I set the admin password the same.

Sorry, the only way you will get the drives recognised is by setting them up and formatting them in the DNS-345.

I assume your not wanting to do that is because you don't have a backup of your data. 

If you do have a backup then just setup the drives as you want them and the unit will format as necessary, you then restore the data from your backup.

I have backups, just nice to be able to swap drives around if necessary.  Plus it takes days to transfer the data.  On my DNS 323 & 325, I kept two drives in the 325 and one in the 323.  I would do an rsync daily from Volume1 to volume 2 on the 325, then once in awhile I would rsync to the one in the 323.  If I need to do a large transfer I could take volume 2 out of the 325 in place the one from the 323 into the 325 (such as if I was starting of with a new fresh drive).  I was rsync'ing just the files that changed.  All three drives are T2 each in size.

With the above method I had triple backups.  In the event my DNS323 or 325 failed the other one would work or I could probably go to one of my linux PC's and get the data.

I my just go ahead and get two new 2T drives and keep the 325 intact and retire the 323.  I got the 345 because of the increased transfer speed and just to have some fun with something new, the 325 was not that bad but the 345 is suppose to have a higher read rate.  I don't mess with raid, mainly trying to backup family photos and movies of the kids.

Can a drive that was formatted in the 345 show up in the 325?  I'll probably try it, I have an old 500G that I can experiment with.

The following will not answer your question, but does offer some background on ShareCenter compatibility. D-Link stated that the filesystem between the DNS-323 and DNS-325 has changed, rendering RAID configurations incompatible between the two series. Standard Volumes, however, were assumed to be swappable between the two models. This information predates the release of the DNS-345, which based on your observations during testing, may have undergone further filesystem revision.

Even if you successfully get a DNS-345 formatted HDD to mount in your DNS-325, do you really want to trust storing your data on a HDD that wasn't natively formatted on the ShareCenter model it was intended for?
