DView recording motion all night with DCS-932l??
« on: December 20, 2012, 08:51:39 AM »

Hey all - can someone one please help me  ???

I have a DCS-932L camera setup in my living room with motion detection activated in DView. During the day it works great, but after nightfall the camera shows random lines in the [poor] video. These lines are being picked up as motion and as such the camera records all night long taking up massive amounts of disk space. Even when I put the camera motion detection on 'lowest' value, it still picks it up.

Is there any way to resolve this issue? Thank you!!

To rule out other causes, you may want to try testing recording motion detection events via night mode using a wired connection or moving the camera closer to the router? This approach will help validate whether you're looking at a poor signal (or perhaps signal interference) issue.

Good idea! Let me give that a try and I'll report back.

I moved the camera closer to the router and the interference did reduce slightly but it is still recording most of the night. I can not (nor do not want to) hard wire the camera so I guess I can live with it for a budget camera. Thanks for you help!

What firmware version are you using on your camera?

Don't settle for a 'reduced slightly but still recording most of the night'. What you are experiencing is not normal (even for a budget ip camera) and if it's not a hardware issue (in which case you should return it) then it should be really easy to fix.
Here's some homework:
  • Did you try changing the resolution, bitrate?
  • Maybe updating/changing the firmware will do.
  • During the day, are there are any false motion detection triggers?
  • Did you configure the AC voltage frequency according to your country (50Hz or 60Hz)?
  • Do you get the same results enabling/desabling the IR leds?
  • For testing purposes put the camera indoors in a room where there's no movement at all (make sure it's not facing to objects like trees, curtains, etc. Look out for vehicle lights)
  • Post a picture so that we can understand what these triggering 'lines' look like.

Plus, update D-ViewCam to the last version v3.3 and far more important, the last Device Pack v1.4.3.
Update the camera firmware to the latest.
Here's a video review of the camera with some night footage

The recently released DCS-932L firmware v1.05 seems to have some issues with motion detection in night mode.  Some DCS-932L users have reported video artifacts that are causing false positives.   :-\

Sorry for the delay in my response. I tried all of your suggestions and nothing worked. I sent the unit back to D-Link and they sent me another camera. This one with the latest firmware. I also updated my application and device pack and so far its working much better. I'm unsure if it was hardware or software but it's working much better now.

Thank you all for your input!!

I'm glad everything finally worked itself out. Sometimes defective units slip through the cracks.

Same for me with a DCS-933L.

Motion detection is useless with the 933L. All false detections.
