Use with iPhone
« on: December 27, 2012, 06:25:58 AM »

I have the DIR-655, Firmware Version : 2.10NA , 17, Oct, 2012. We have three iPhone 4's and two iPhone 4S's and there is a behavior that seems to happen with the 4S. The iPhone 4's are all connecting with 11n but the 4S's are only connecting with 11g according to the Wireless page in the router. Is there some setting I have to change to get the 4S's to connect with 11n? I am running in mixed 11g/11n mode as I have laptops that are 11g only.

Thanks.

If you only try to connect a 4s with out any others being connected, Will the 4s connect at the mode?
Was the router updated recently? Of so was a factory reset done before and after sending the file?
What was the prior version that was loaded? Was it working before the update?

The 4S's connect with 11g when no other iPhones are connected. This is a new router so I haven't used any other version. This new one replaced an old DIR-655 that also showed the same problem. That had an earlier firmware version but I do not know what it is as the old router is dead.

Try setting the wifi mode to single mode N and the band width to Auto 20/40Mhz as a quick test. Will the 4S connect then?

If after that and still won't work, it's possible that downgrading to v2.07 could help. There is one problem that we found with v2.10NA and guest zone not working with some WiFi devices.  :-\

When I switched to just 11n, the 4S connected fine.

Changed to Auto 20/40MHz and downgraded to 2.07NA but that did not make any difference. Whenever we are on mixed 11g and 11n, the 4S runs at 11g. It must be something in the router.

Has anyone else seen this with an iPhone 4S or is it just me?

I just setup a new Dir 655 version B1 in my mountain house. I loaded firware 2.10NA on the router first thing. My wife’s Iphone 4s is showing it connected as 11g instead of 11n. She has an original IPad which shows connected as 11n. All seem to work ok. At least she has not complained. My Roku is showing 11n also and works fine. I think the only error I see right now is the Iphone 4s should connect as a N device.  We are streaming movies and using all devices at the same time without any problems so I am happy right now.
PS.
I am using a Windows 7 laptop. My connection is 1.5meg down on a local cable company.

Will the iPhone 4S connect if you switch the WiFi mode from Mixed ALL to Single mode N?
Is the Bandwidth set for Auto 20/40Mhz?

Under Advanced Wireless, make sure WMM Enable is checked. iDevices need that to connect at Wireless N speeds.

OK. I changed the channel width to 20/40 MHz first. The IPhone 4s still connects as 11g. I then tried to change mode to 802.11n only and the system required the Cipher to be AES not TKIP. So I changed WPA to WPA2 Only with Cipher type to AES. The IPhone 4s still shows under STATUS as connecting with 11g even though I have it set to 802.11n only. Is there a bug in the reporting of the IPhone 4s?
I also checked under Advanced Wireless and WMM is enabled.

I would downgrade to v2.07 and test again. Do a factory reset before and after sending the v2.07 FW file and the set up the router from scratch. Please use IE browser during this process.

OK I found firmware 2.07NA. I loaded it and ran load from factory defaults again. My wife’s IPhone 4s with IOS 6 is reported as connected with 802.11g. Made all the same changes as above  to 802.11n only 20/40Mhz WAP2 only with AES. The IPhone 4s still shows as connected with 802.11g. I think it could be a reporting problem with the router software. What was the ISO 6 fix in the 2.10NA firmware? I may want to go back to version 2.10NA firmware.
