Cannot access USB drive after firmware upgrade
« on: December 31, 2012, 08:30:33 PM »

Hi,

I'm new with NAS, and I just bought the DNS-320 over the Xmas

There is no hard drive installed, just plug-in a USB external drive to the USB port, and I was able to browse to the USB drive from everywhere within my local network, such as from laptop, Android tablet, Google TV device (which is just another Android device)

However, I couldn't find and access the DNS-320 anymore from the network after the firmware upgrade

I'm able to browse to the DNS-320 login and see the USB drive is connected

I haven't had time to read through the forum to see if there is a solution, but if you know how to solve this problem, please point me to the direction

thanks you very much for any advice

regards
Jimmy

I have a vague recollection of reading somewhere that the newer firmware needs at least one hard drive installed to work properly... so IMO your options would be to roll back the firmware to the version you had (by "upgrading" it to the older version), or install at least one hard drive in the unit.

BTW, using firmware version 2.02, network access (reading/writing) to an internal hard drive is somewhat faster than the attached USB drive, so if you're going to be doing a lot of file transfers you might prefer an internal drive...

Hi Richard,

if someone can confirm that firmware 2.02 or 2.03 needs at least one hard drive to work, that would explain what I'm experiencing

I only have a 1TB external hard drive (USB 2.0) and a 2 TB internal hard drive to play with (but I want to format the 2TB hard drive until I get a new one), so with the original firmware shipped with the box, I could see access the USB drive in my local network, but after the firmware upgrade from 2.00 to 2.03, didn't work anymore, even I could downgrade to 2.02, still didn't work, and I'm stuck with the firmware 2.02 as I had problem rolling back to 2.00, nor I could reapply 2.03

thanks for your info, if you see anything related to this situation, please get that posted

again, thanks
Jimmy
