DIR 505, can not change visibility status
« on: January 01, 2013, 02:35:43 PM »

Hi. I'm using my DIR 505 in repeater mode.
My DIR 505 has hardware version A1 and Firmware version 1.05.

I want to hide my SSID, so I have chosen to "create a new WI-FI network name" (SSID) under
Setup->extended wi-fi setup->extended wi-fi network settings.

All works fine. The only thing that does not work is to change the "Visibility Status" from "Visible" to "Invisible".

I can choose "Invisible" and click on the "Save Settings" button, but it wont turn invisible and visible I chosen again when I check the config.

Any ideas how-to make the SSID invisible ?

Kind regards, RG

Is the Main host router that the 505 is connected to hidden as well if your running the 505 in repeater mode? I presume the host routers WiFi might also need to be hidden? I presume if this is the case, the 505 would need to have the SSID and PW manually entered in to identify the main hidden WiFi.  ???

Hi, FurryNutz. Thank you for your answer.

I have no problem to connect the 505 to the main routers wi-fi and I have tested both hidden and broadcasting SSID (at the main router).

I use now the 505 (repeater mode) connected to the hidden SSID from the main router.
The only thing that does not work is to change the "Visibility Status" from "Visible" to "Invisible".

I can choose "Invisible" and click on the "Save Settings" button, but it wont turn invisible and visible I chosen again when I check the config.

Kind regards, RG

I would phone contact DLink support, level 2 or higher to see if the Visibility options is available in Repeater mode. Possiblity it may not be. Let us know what they say.

I have created a account at DLINK support and posted my question there.
They will charge me if I call them.

Waiting for a reply from them.

Glad they responded. I'm sure they will attempt to reproduce this and see what happens. Keep us posted.

Hi guys!

Did you get the solution for this problem?

I am in the same situation also.

Please inform me, if you have any idea how could be hidden the SSID broadcasted by the DIR 505.

Thank You

I recommend that you phone contact DLink support, level 2 or higher and see if they can help with this. Seems like the Invisibility option is not working.

Let us know what they say.

This is the answer from D-Link Help:

Going through your email we would like to inform you that you cannot hide the SSID in a repeater mode but you can try the following workaroud to hide the SSID:

Step 1 Change the visibility status of the wireless network to invisible in router mode on the DIR-505 and save the settings.

Step 2 Now when you switch the DIR-505 to a repeater mode, the SSID will remain hidden.

Should you require further assistance with your D-Link products, please reply to this message, or call toll free at 877-453-5465.

Thank you for networking with D-Link .

I haven't tried it in router mode yet. In Hotpot mode doesn't work, so I suppose it would be the same result in router mode also.

If i would try, I will post it.

I've just got a answer with a link to a beta file (firmware upgrade) from the developers/support.
Have not tried to upgrade yet, but the link is :

ftp://dlinktemp:dlinktemp@194.117.170.198/Router/DIR-505/DIR505A1_FW106B05Beta09_ssid.bin

Hope that helps.

I would be cautious about following that link - the IP address doesn't belong to any registered domain and is assigned to a company in Sweden.
