Rev E3 - Date Max is 2012
« on: January 01, 2013, 03:24:03 PM »

My iphone started resetting the connection every 2 minutes today. I noticed that the date maximum is Dec 31, 2012. My logs are getting messed up, and NTP isn't setting. Is there a firmware update for REV E3?? I'm at 5.10 right now. Thanks!

What region are you located?
Has a Factory Reset been performed?

Link>Wireless Installation Considerations
What wireless modes are you using? Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
Try single mode G or N or mixed G and N?
Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
Try setting a manual channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear.
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto.
What wireless devices do you have connected?
Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use InSSIDer to find out. How many?

Turn off WISH, and WPS under Advanced.
Try turning off Short GI, WLAN Partition, and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.
Enable WMM Enable Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.
Double NAT
To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged.
If the modem can't be bridged then see if the modem has a DMZ option and input the IP address the router gets from the modem and put that into the modems DMZ.

Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1. Use IE, Opera or FF to manage the router.
Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking. This ensures each devices gets its own IP address when turned on and connected, eliminates IP address conflicts and helps in troubleshooting.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking. Disable uPnP for testing Port Forwarding rules.
WAN Port Speed set to Auto or specific speed? Some newer ISP modems support 1000Mb so manually setting to Gb speeds can be supported by the router. Advanced/Advanced Networking/WAN Port Speed
Set Time and Time Zone under Tools/Time.

FurryNutz,
Thanks for your quick response!

I'm in North America/US
A factory reset has been performed on the unit, but not recently(probably 4 months ago)

As far as the wi-fi in the area, all channels but two are occupied, but not terribly strong.
I have the unit set up as an AP only, no dhcp and firewall turned off.
There is an average of 7-10 devices connected to it via wireless at any time, 5 of them are Apple devices.

Secruity is WPA-Personal, WPA2 Only, AES, GroupKeyUpdateInterval=3600
Mode is mixed n,g,b with Auto-Scan. Visibility is on.
Channel Width is Auto 20/40.

After reading your post I changed the following:
Turned off auto-scan and set the channel to the 'clearest' (5).
Turned off ShortGI.

I'm watching the behavior now.

I'm still curios about a firmware update. The behavior on my iPhone is recent (today) and I have not made any changes to the configuration, although Christmas has ended up bringing in even more wireless to our house. I also email the log files and have a watch set up to detect unknown MAC addresses either connecting or attempting to connect. The timestamps are kind of important for that process.

Thanks again!

I noticed this last night as well - the time setting tab has a pull-down, and it only goes to 2012.  Seems incredibly shortsighted.
The alarming part is that setting an NTP time host won't fix it either, something is hard-coded to stop at 2012.

I believe it only will mess up the logs, and scheduling if you are attempting to use it.  Everything else should be fine, unless D-Link also added code to make the platform more brittle.

I recommend Phone contacting DLink support, level 2 or higher and ask about this to see if it can be fixed or not. Rev As thru Hs are not seeing much if any activity on FW updates and the only one active right now is the Rev I model of the 615. I don't know if that has the same problem or not.

If the time isn't effecting use of the router and getting Internet and WiFi, I guess it should work well for you. IF something is happening or being effected by the TIME, phone contact DLink and ask about it. If nothing can be done, then you probably need to get in to an more newer DLink router product, as I don't seen the 615 being active much beyond the new year.

Let us know what DLink says if someone calls them.

Good Luck.

I log web access on my DIR-615 and I get date listed as 2013 without a problem.  I have the time/date set automatically with the 'Enable NTP server' check box.

Sounds like the NTP is keeping time corectly then. I noticed this on the DIR 685. The year only goes to 2012 however NTP sets the correct year as 2013. Guess this will be the work around. Hope it works for others.

Thanks everyone for your input.

Update:

For some reason NTP will not set my unit. I've tried my internal NTP server and a couple of public servers. I've had problems with workstations not setting because their current time was so far off, NTP would refuse to update, I suspect that may be happening here, and I cannot set the time manually to anything past Dec 31 2012, nor can I 'copy time from this computer'.

The issue with my iPhones has cleared up. Setting ShortGI and assigning a dedicated channel appeared to help. I still can't figure out why it suddenly became an issue, but it looks like its back to normal now. One theory I have is that there was some wireless configurations occurring close by, and with my dlink set to auto-channel, it started jumping alot(?maybe?).

I've done some quick research, and found that WPA2 is not time dependent. My initial thought was that the WPA2 keys were getting nerfed by the time differential. This is not the case.

The issue with the year in my log process ended up being moot, there is no year in the timestamp in the logs being emailed.

However, the time is drifting significantly. Its losing about 8 minutes per day. At this point its not a showstopper, but definitely an annoyance.

Thanks again for everyone's input. I'm going to see if I can find out why it won't NTP update and will report back. I'm still interested in any opinions!

if you happen to do a factory reset then select an NTP server and reboot the router, does it set the time correctly?

To add to this.

a friend of mine has an ancient dir-615, not sure of FW/HW id - however this does have the option of changing the date to 2013+ whereas my new dir-615 only goes to 2012. NTP doesn't set the time

Furthermore it seems that there are some limitations to the new dir-615 out there, also the transmission rate setting of manual wireless settings is missing.

You'll need to phone contact DLink support and ask about this issue.
