Just bought a DNS-325 but....
« on: January 02, 2013, 10:36:27 AM »

I just bought a Dlink 325 and went through the directions to install.

I originally bought this to stream music and video to the various computers in my house (tablet, phone, Sony Google Tv, laptops and MS 360 xbox.

I am able to see the 325 under on my destktop under the Computer icon as :   Volume 1 (\\192.xxx.x.xx) (Z:)

However, I can't see it using my laptop or anything else in the house.

I'm a newbie and would appreciate any help.

Thanks in advance.  Cheers

Try directly mapping the DNS-325 directly from Windows. Please see the following two threads:

Are there files located on Volume_1 that you can see on your desktop PC?

JavaLawyer

Yes, I do have a file in Volume_1.

Just to recap, this is what I see on my desktop.

Computer icon

Local Disk (C)
Local Disk (E)
Volume 1 (\\192.xxx.x.xx) (z):

(When I click on Volume 1 (\\192.xxx.x.xx) (z): I see a folder titled Ajaxpf and the video file that I copied)

Network icon

DLINK-08F0SE
Local Network name

However, on my laptop I see:

Network icon

Local Network name

(When I click on the Local Network name I get an icon called 'Users Share'

Any advice?  I get the feeling that I'm close but I'm missing something here.

Cheers

If your laptop(s) are connected to the same LAN and router as the desktop PC and DNS-325, then they should see the DNS-325 without issue.

At the very least you should be able to access the DNS-325 web UI through your laptops by entering the IP address of the DNS-325 in a web browser.  ???

Thanks Javalawyer

I do appreciate your time.

I'll plug away at it and see what I can do.

Wish me luck.

I'm back

Just an update.  I can see the 325 through my browser but under the network icon on my laptop, I can only see my desktop.

This leads me to think that somehow I didn't map the DNS-325 directly from Windows correctly.

A quick question for anyone that can help.

The DVd that can with the 325 includes many things like support documentation and so on.
One thing included is called the 'DLink Storage utility', what is it exactly?

I don't believe the utility does anything more than mapping Windows directly achieves.  Once you map Volume_1 via windows it should appear under "My Computer" as a clickable Network Location.

Just to be clear on your setup, you have a router using DHCP with a desktop and DNS-325 directly connected to the Ethernet ports?  I presume the laptop is wireless and connecting directly to the same router (not another router via a WAN)?  You may want to try connecting the laptop via a wired connection just to test connectivity.

This utility will also find your NAS on the network based on MAC address only and allows you to alter it's network setup:

That's it, thanks.  I tried using it: LAN Apply button and the Drive Mapping Connect button.

On both occasions it said that DHCP client was enabled and Volume_1 (z) was successfully mapped!

You mean on my laptop, right?

Good news!

My 325 does show up on my laptop.  What was wrong?

Well I rather not tell, it was such a stupid and obvious mistake that......

Any ways, onward to bigger things.

Next thing to tackle is how to stream to my Xbox and Sony Google Player (BTW, I got this free through a credit card promotion but I would not recommend buying it.  Not very impressed with it.)

Almost forgot, Thanks for your help ladies and gents.

I've been reading on this forum about something called a Fun Plug.  What is it and what does it do?

Regarding streaming to an xbox, I've read something about UPnP.  Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Cheers and thanks in advance.

Fun-Plug: http://nas-tweaks.net/371/hdd-installation-of-the-fun_plug-0-7-on-nas-devices/
Start from Purpose, risks, and benefits
Re streaming: UPnP is a wider standard upon which the DLNA standard builds. You either activate the built-in UPnP AV Server on NAS or go down the Fun-Plug path and install something more advanced, Twonky Media Server, for example.
