I have set up my xbox and its linked to the router.  But, I can't get the Xbox to see my computer.  I have checked the firewall and that is fine, as I have removed it and still no Xbox.  I try with windows media and set up the code xbox gives me and nothing.  So it has to be the router.  How can I get the router to see the Xbox and allow me access.  I have ticked a laptop that shares my comp and that is fine.  But not this Xbox.  Can you help please

You might install a external network switch after the router and connect up all other wired devices to the switch. This will eliminate any unnecessary router processing and configuration between the wired devices.

Thanks but now I am lost.  What is a external network switch?  And if there is a beast where do you put it?

A network switch is similar to what you see on the back of your modem, the 4 open LAN Ports? Thats a switch however thats attached internally to the modem and router. An external is just that, external with out any additional hardware. They come in 4 ports all the way up to 48 ports. I have a 24 port.

It would look like this when it's connected to the modem:
DSL-2470R>external switch<>All wired devices connected to the switch.

Okay, but the Xbox is down stairs and not connected by wiring does that make a difference?

Yes, the xbox would need to be connected via LAN cable to the switch if possible.

Makes me wonder if there is a wireless setting on the modem preventing network sharing.

I would recommend testing a wired LAN connection to the xbox from the modem as well and see if the problem still appears. If it doesn't, could be a wireless setting in the modem thats preventing access.

I would recommend getting a network switch also.

Then connecting the Xbox is not possible. I have read something about ports, but I have no idea how that is done.  I did a CMD and then ipconfig.  The ip address came up as 192.168.1.3.  I have tested the firewall and its fine.  But what I can't get my head around is why the router doesn't allow my comp to see the xbox.  There has to be a way to get port forwarding to accept it?  I have no idea what to put where though.  The only thing I can put is the ip address.  What public start is and public end port is I have no idea.  Xbox gives me a code to put into MS Media for the extended.  I do that and it still cannot find the xbox.  By it allowing me to access my comp it would help me in space and transfering films etc.

Port Forwarding is configuring addresses and ports WAN to LAN, your configuration is LAN to LAN so it's not needed. I also use occasionally xbox to watch movies on my server using Media Center. However my network uses a network switch and wired connections for this. I also use a DIR series routers. I understand that your using DSL. You could either ask DLink to see if the modem is bridgeable and use a DIR series router to handle your networking as well.

I recommend that you phone contact DLink support, ask for level 2 support and see if they can help you wit the configuration of the Modem. There is probably some option or configuration of the Modem that needs to be set up to allow access from the WLAN to the LAN.

One thing you should have them help you set up is Reserved IP addresses for ALL of your devices.

Heres what I would suggest you consider:
1. Bridge the DSL Modem and you can still use it as a modem for your ISP connection.
2. Get an external DIR series router. Any one would do however considier your current and future needs. Will you be using 5Ghz in the near future? Also consider that if your area has many other routers near by, 2.4Ghz could be affected by them and thus 5ghz would be a good option to have in addition to 2.4Ghz. However 5Ghz is also affected by building materials and is mainly used in Line of Sight. However it does work with good with in about 10-15 feet with one wood material wall, ceiling or floor separating the host router from the client. Any farther then that, signal will degrade.

I recommend reviewing the DIR-8 series routers, 825, 827, 835, or 857 for 2.4 and 5Ghz WiFi, or if you don't need 5Ghz, the DIR-645, 655 or 657 routers. DLink is comming out with a new DGL-5500 Gaming router which is a follow on to the DGL-4500 which was a great router for gaming. I have 3 of them.   I can't wait to get my hands on the 5500. Not sure where it will be sold as far as regions yet. So you might want to hold out and see.

If you can get into a 5500, then you may want to upgrade the xbox WiFi from 2.4 to 5Ghz using this:
DAP-1533

Or if you really wanna go over the top if you get the 5500, and upgrade the connection between the 5500 router and the xbox with using AC WiF, you could get this for the xbox upgrade:
DIR-865L.
This can be bridged wirelessly, not wired and will provide an Wireless AC bridged connection to the DGL-5500. I have the 865L, nice router. Will be a nice WiFi bridge for the DGL-5500 and xbox. You would use the LAN cable from the xbox and connect it to the back of the 856L in bridged mode.
Again, check to see what is available in your region.

These are some suggestions to help you get a better connection between the xbox and your other devices.

3. Depending on what you get and how it's all configured, you shouldn't need an external network switch, however I would recommend one anyways as it is very handy to have and does help if you have other wired devices on the network.

It's possible that maybe someone can take a look at the modem settings to see if there is any thing we can do remotely to configure the modem so you can get media center working better. Might be worth a try. If not, You'll have some thinking to do. Let us know what you decide.
