How to check *router* uptime?
« on: January 16, 2013, 06:56:02 PM »

Hi all, another issue with the DIR-655 (I think).  I get frequent internet disconnects.  Sometimes when I notice I can't get into the web gui; other time I can get in but I have to re-authenticate, and I see the wan port is re-initializing.  So of course, the "WAN uptime" starts again at zero.  I can then look at the "statistics" page and see that the LAN packets are really low (like low 4 digits).

SO, my guess is the router is randomly resetting.  But how can I check the router uptime??  I searched and I see plenty of folks reporting their uptimes, but I can't find it anywhere in the GUI.  I want to be able to prove that it's the router and not the cable modem or WAN connection....

I was getting the logs emailed, but really can't decipher anything.  I have "system activity", "attacks", and "notices" enabled.

It's DIR-655, hardware B1, firmware 2.10NA.

I already emailed DLINK support asking for a warranty replacement, as this one is only 10 months old.  If they don't come through, it's time to jump ship to a new vendor.  Will be my second dead one in under a year.  I spend too much time with this.  I want something I can set it and forget it.  Technology is supposed to enable; not consume all of your free time...

Does this happen if you temporarily disable the WiFi radio?
Usually an indication of the routers WAN port trying to initialize is that the connection between the router and ISP modem, ISP modem and or ISP services are the cause.

no, i haven't tried to temporarily disable the wifi radio.

The WAN port will also re-initialize when the router first comes online.  So that's why I'm trying to distinguish between router uptime and WAN uptime.

What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Link> Cat6 is recommended.

I would have the ISP physically check the cable lines going into the house and make sure the signal level is to spec for the ISP modem you are using.
If there are any T.V. line splitters on the line going into the ISP Modem, this can introduce noise on the line and lower the signal levels. Dedicated ISP line is preferred. If a T.V. line splitter is needed, use 1 good quallity one.

Ask your ISP for a new modem?
Try testing the router at a different location, like a friend or families place, does the problem follow?

I've had my 655 using v2.1NA for longer than 10 days with out any issues.

So are you telling me there is no way to check router uptime???

I really admire your enthusiasm.  But those are the kinds of things I don't really want to have to do.  I'm a technologist by day; at home I want to be just an end user.

Router up time is displayed under Status/Device Info.

I can identify with you. Same here man. Yet here I am.

Thanks!  But I don't see it on mine.  Maybe they eliminated it in the 2.10 firmware??

The only uptime I see there is in the "WAN" pane:  "connection up time", which is telling me how long the WAN connection has been active.  So that's not really telling me how long the router itself has been up.

And, It's comcast with a ZOOM modem that I bought instead of paying the 5 bucks a month; if I can rule out the router, which I really think is the problem due to the LAN packets being reset after I see a drop (and my tablet always connecting to the downstairs wireless access point instead of the one 5 feet away, which is telling me it connect, the WIFI drops, and it finds the downstairs AP before the 655 reboots), then I'll go upstream and look at all the comcast/modem stuff...

DLink routers only display connection time.

Link>Wireless Installation Considerations
What wireless modes are you using? Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
Try single mode G or N or mixed G and N?
Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
Try setting a manual channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear.
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto.
What wireless devices do you have connected?
Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use InSSIDer to find out. How many?

Turn off WISH, and WPS under Advanced.
Try turning off Short GI, WLAN Partition, and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.
Enable WMM Enable Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.
Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.
