D-Link DIR-655 and Teredo
« on: January 30, 2013, 03:50:48 PM »

Hi there,

I have a D-Link DIR-655, Hardware Version: A2, Firmware Version: 1.31EU.

I noticed recently my logs are being flooded with:

UPnP renew entry 255.255.255.255 <-> XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX:XXXXX <-> XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX:XXXXX UDP timeout:0 'Teredo'

It's coming from a Windows 7 computer on my network. I know Teredo is to do with IPv6 and Windows Remote Assistance uses it (I used remote assistance recently), so I don't know if that's the reason it's recently started doing it?

Is there anyway to stop this showing up in the logs?

Thanks

Thats just the log saying that it's seeing some IPv6 coming across. The Rev A do not support IPv6 so it's just logging it. I presume if you disabled IPv6 on the Windows 7 PC that it might not log it anymore.

Hi FurryNutz,

Thanks for your reply.

What I'm trying to understand is why it's only recently started, the event is being logged so often I can't even see the past 24 hours in the log anymore (I used to be able to see at least a few days), when no more then a month ago I'd never even seen a reference to Teredo in the logs.

I have 2 entries in my Internet Sessions table now that are related to the UPnP Teredo event that never leave:

Local | NAT | Internet | Protocol | State | Dir | Priority | Time | Out
XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX:XXXXX | XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX:XXXXX | XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX:XXXX | UDP | - | Out | 128 | 296
XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX:XXXXX | XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX:XXXXX | *.*.*.*:* | UDP | - | -   128 | 0

There are 3 things I don't understand:

1. Why has it only recently started?
2. I have a Windows Vista Laptop, why does that not do this?
3. Why does Teredo feel the need to renew the UPnP entry many times a minute?

Thanks in advance.

Would only probably start log due to something you've either added or changed on your network or on the PCs. I would review any changes on the Windows 7 PC and see what has changed.

Been any windows updates? If this only happens with this one PC, it's got to be something with this PC then. You might do some web search on Windows 7 and Teredo and see if you can find something. I know there as been some items like this before and usually it's alway been with Windows Vista or 7.

Hi FurryNutz,

I THINK I have found the problem. It appears to do it when Windows Update KB2750841 is installed.

I still have the 2 entries in my Internet Sessions table but so far the UPnP events have stopped.

Now the only question is, is the update important enough to re-install it knowing that it makes my router logs not so useful.

Thanks for your help.

Glad you found it.

It maybe non-critical. You'll need to see what that update does and see if it's really needed.
One thing you could try as a test, disable uPnP and see what happens in the logs.  ???

Just turn off IPv6 in your network adapters properties.
