Remote Desktop Will Not Work. Internal LAN. Missing A Setting??
« on: February 03, 2013, 01:42:57 PM »

I purchased the DIR-657 for the wireless N and the Media Share capabilities. I was using a competitor's router wireless G. With that router my remote desktop worked flawlessly. I use Remote Desktop so I can control a computer in the basement with the main PC on the 3rd floor. Yeah, I'm lazy to walk the stairs. After I "upgraded" to the DIR-657, my remote desktop will NOT work. I opened port 3389 to the PC I wish to control. Didn't help. Set the same PC to the DMZ, didn't help. I have no idea why it doesn't work. Going back to the old router until I get some kind of help here. Thanks In Advance.

Link>Welcome!
What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on routers web page under status.
What region are you located?
Are you wired or wireless connected to the router?

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?

Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1. Use IE, Opera or FF to manage the router.
Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking. This ensures each devices gets its own IP address when turned on and connected, eliminates IP address conflicts and helps in troubleshooting.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
If IPv6 is an option on the router, select Local Connection Only or Disable IPv6 options under Setup/IPv6.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking. Disable uPnP for testing Port Forwarding rules.

WAN Port Speed set to Auto or specific speed? Some newer ISP modems support 1000Mb so manually setting to Gb speeds can be supported by the router. Advanced/Advanced Networking/WAN Port Speed
Set current Time Zone, Date and Time. Use an NTP server feature. Tools/Time.

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

Port 3389 isn't needed if your remoting in from LAN to LAN devices. I also use this sometimes to connect from one device to another on my LAN.

How is your router connected with your devices? Directly to the back of the 657 or is there a switch involved?
Maybe a switch would help resolve this too.

Here what mine looks like:
ISP Modem>Router<>24pt swtich<>All wired devices connected to swtich.

Thanks for the response! I appreciate your efforts...

Q: What Hardware version is your router?  A: A1
Q: What Firmware version is currently loaded?  A: 1.00
Q: What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?  A: Cable - Penn Tele Data
Q: What ISP Modem make and model do you have?  A:
Suggestion: Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) - Done
Suggestion: Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option - The DIR-657 doesn't offer that feature control which I can find.
Suggestion: Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking. -  Done
WAN speed adjustment is set to AUTO already
Time / Date Set with NTP.
Suggestion: If IPv6 is an option on the router, select Local Connection Only – Done
Suggestion: Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP – Done
Suggestion: Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming – Done
No Anti-Virus or Firewall Programs working … For this experimentation.
How is your router connected with your devices?  The Controlled PC is Wired , the controlling PC is wireless. Both connected directly to the DIR-657.
Comment: U have a 24 port switch for your HOME? Haha Nice! A true Geek ;), Or a workaholic.

NOTE: I then set the client PC to a STATIC IP address on the LAN, and instead of the NAME of the PC I inserted the IP Address in the Remote Desktop Control, and it works fine.  So it seems there is a problem with the DNS settings on the router?

Both, LOL. Switches come in VERY handy. You should try one.  ;D

Ya, I only use IP addressing when inputing that with RDP. I haven't attempted to use the Host name yet. I think using IP addresses resolves many things instead of using Host names.

Some of these routers don't have loop back so it's possible that could be hindering the use of Host Names. I think if you put a Switch online, that could resolve this.
