Impossible to format HDs in a DNS320 in Raid1
« on: February 05, 2013, 06:32:05 AM »

Hi everybody,
I bought a DNS-320, with 2 seagate HD (2T0), i'm running on OSX 10.5.8 and I can't format them in Raid1. each time I followed the HD configuration, it doesn't work and they simply get formatted in standard. Does anybody have the same problem ? Is it due to the size of the HD ?
Thanks for your answers

What firmware version are you using?

Are the HDDs new or pulled from another device?
You may want to try mounting the HDDs in a Windows PC and remove the partitions to prevent the DNS-320 from reading any legacy information.

The HDDs are both new (ST2000DL003-9VT1). If I try mounting the HDDs in a PC and read them, does it mean they can be formated in the PC and then remounted in the DNS ? Or just remove the partitions while mounted in the PC ?

I see that albftz posted a topic in the forum with quite the same subject : "Problems configuring Raid 1 on 2.03"

I would still try mounting/formatting the HDDs in Windows to prevent the DNS-320 from getting confused. Since the DNS-320 uses the Linux filesystem, formatting the HDDs in Windows will render them unreadable by the DNS-320 forcing a fresh format/configuration.

OK ! And if i try to format them through the DNS 320 linked to a windows PC, will it be the same or do I have to dismount them, format them through windows and then remount them and format them in Raid1  (just checking if I understood well) ?

My similar problem was solved by logging in from Firefox instead of Safari. (See my earlier post) Firmware (2.02 vs. 2.03) changes and reformatting didn't help.  Apparently Safari doesn't process the Configuration Wizard HTML properly.

Presumably, logging in from IE/Windows would also work.

Before you go down that road, did you try using IE? (try that first)
I don't think you can format HDDs through Windows while they are still mounted in the DNS-320. The Windows PC should only be able to see the logical volume presented by the DNS-320, not the HDD itself.
