Remote Backup: DNS-343 to DNS-323
« on: February 05, 2013, 01:48:45 PM »

I have a DNS-343 (master) in one city and a DNS-323 (backup) in another city. I'd like the 323 to be a remote backup of the 343, and while the 343 has Remote Backup functionality in its firmware, the 323 does not support it out of the box like the newer DNS-325.

Does anyone have a HOW TO on installing the required tools on the 323 to allow it to receive and rsync with the 343?  I've found some guides on how to do this while on the same network but that's not the situation I'm in.

Any help would be appreciated!

If you know the IP address (or have setup DDNS), then whether or not it is on the same subnet does not matter. Depending on the network setup(s) you may have to setup portforwarding on the router(s). But, that's it. The mechanics are the same local or remote.

To dosborne: By using the Scheduled Download and Incremental Backup?  I've tried playing with that and I can't get it to work.

Since I'm not having any luck with rsync, I've now changed gears and am trying to use "lftp mirror" to sync both boxes.

Rsync supports it directly, but it is outside the scope of this forum.

Example to sync with a remote location
/rsync -av --stats --delete [[host name or IP]]::[[source location]] [[target location]]

Scheduled download works fine - you do need to make sure that network path to the source you're downloading from allows a connection, which is a little harder to do for a "remote" backup.

RAID1 is for disk redundancy - NOT data backup - don't confuse the two.
