DIR 655 Xbox Media Center Extender Loses connection
« on: February 07, 2013, 08:44:13 PM »

Here's my scenario guys:
I have an old laptop in another room running WMC with windows 7. This is wired to my new DIR 655 router then via a switch to another room to my xbox 360. I have successfully connected the xbox as an extender but after a few minutes of idle time, the connection drops and my xbox automatically restarts. If I'm streaming something it seems to work fine.

All ethernet connections.

I know the problem is with my new router because I had no problems with my old wrt54g2. I have setup a static IP and opened the ports for xbox live.

As far as settings:
QOS off
UPnP ON
Multicast ON
IPv6 Multicast ON
NAT set to endpoint filtering independent

I've tried searching for any similar problems but have found none. I am really at a loss to the problem. I feel like it may be a NAT firewall problem or something but I really don't know. Any suggestions??

UPDATE:

Just checked the logs after a connection failure. Nothing there really....some entries were made but not right before or during the connection failure.

Link>Welcome!
What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on routers web page under status.
What region are you located?

Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1. Use IE, Opera or FF to manage the router.
Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking. This ensures each devices gets its own IP address when turned on and connected, eliminates IP address conflicts and helps in troubleshooting.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking. Disable uPnP for testing Port Forwarding rules.

Set Time and Time Zone under Tools/Time.

Reset your xbox 360 network settings as well on the xbox.

Hardware version: B1
Firmware: 2.10NA
Location: USA

I already turn off all QOS, DNS, and DNS relay.

I am actually using Amahi to perform DNS and DHCP services, so DNS and DHCP is off. I have assigned static IPs to everything.

Like I said the firewall settings are on Endpoint Independent.
uPnP and Multicast has already been enabled.

I don't see a "disable uPnP for testing port forwarding"

Time has already been set. I did see some dropped packets last night but I wasn't using anything (unless my dvr was recording or something)

I checked the logs on the WMC PC. The event view doesn't really show any problems except this warning:

The Media Center Extender user was abruptly disconnected. Event ID 117

I have a question? Is all traffic behind the firewall allowed? This is really blowing my mind ???

I would post an image but don't see how.

TCP: 3074,53,80
UDP: 88,3074,53

I'm about to send this router back to Amazon!

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
Check ISP MTU requirements, Cable is usually 1500, DSL is around 1492 down to 1472. Call the ISP and ask.

I recommend that you search the internet for that Event ID number and see if there is any information regarding that and any network configuration information for using Media Extender services on routers. This seems like a configuration issue with the media extender.

I recommend that you do a complete factory reset of the router, use 1 PC, turn off all other devices, configure the router from scratch using Reserved IP addresses for each device ON the router, then set up the media extender.

Comcast cable. Apparently they recommend the MTU setting of 1500. I think the problem with Xbox Live was with port forwarding. Somehow it got unchecked during all the changes.

I have searched that event ID and returned none to minimal results.

If all else continues to fail I will resort to your suggestion. Like I said, the problem happened after I changed my router. No problems before.

I was watching the network traffic and noticed a couple drops in bandwidth through WMC.

I checked the logs and saw this:

info   Feb 8 12:52:00    UDHCPD Inform: add_lease 192.168.1.101
info   Feb 8 12:50:58    UDHCPD Inform: add_lease 192.168.1.101
info   Feb 8 12:49:55    UDHCPD Inform: add_lease 192.168.1.101

does this mean? Is this computer losing its connection? The only other recent change (before new router) was a gigabit ethernet card on this PC.

I just noticed this in the log before the connection reset on the xbox as well:

debug   Feb 8 12:56:52    Debu: Joining group 224.0.0.251 upstream on IF address 75.65.160.241
debug   Feb 8 12:56:52    Debu: Leaving group 224.0.0.251 upstream on IF address 75.65.160.241

I can confirm this happens before I get the lost connection signal. That group IP is for the multicast.

Try this after your factory reset and see if setting up a QoS rule for your PC will help. Use the XBL port listed for the 360. This will work in the same way for a PC: Gaming and QoS for XBL

Your replies are hard to follow like that.
I have the same as you: Motorola SB6120

Just reporting that its adding the IP address to it's list of connected devices.
Why would the IP address be added multiple times? I have not disconnected the PC or anything. I have seen this repeatedly in the logs. Generally after the Multicast disconnect:

info   Feb 8 13:05:22    UDHCPD Inform: add_lease 192.168.1.101
debug   Feb 8 13:03:21    Debu: Joining group 224.0.0.251 upstream on IF address 75.65.160.241
debug   Feb 8 13:03:21    Debu: Leaving group 224.0.0.251 upstream on IF address 75.65.160.241

Do you think it is a problem with multicasting? Its loses connection every few minutes as you can tell.

Reason for asking for make and model information is so we can determine if your ISP modem has a built in router or it is stand alone. Yours is stand alone. Having a modem with build in router makes connections to other services problematic. I'm trying to help you narrow down any possibilities here. Modem is good here.

Not knowing of all that you have done and that you haven't started over with a factory reset and set this up from scratch using Reserved IP addresses and then setting up QoS as suggestion, hard to tell what is going on. I think you need to stop and start over. Turn everything off accept for one PC and set up the router from scratch. Then use the QoS suggestion as well.

Is this extender the PC or a separate device like an xbox?

Multi cast should be enabled however you can test to see if it does anything if you disable it.
I recommend that you disable or set IPv6 settings to LOCAL CONNECTION ONLY and disable IPv6 Multicast. Only IPv4 Multi-cast should be enabled. Lets trouble shoot this on the IPv4 stack first before attempting to get any IPv6 configurations going.

Yeah I'm not that dumb haha

I will try to do a reset sometime this weekend but don't have anymore time now.
I replaced the dlink with my old trust linksys wrt54g2 and everything works like a charm now (as it did before). No static IPs, QOS, or port fwds along with my amahi server as DHCP and DNS server. I would like to use the dlink in the future due to gigabit ethernet and N. SO this leads me to believe a problem with the router.

I have re-configured and setup the extender multiple times.

I have an old laptop running WMC and the Xbox running as an extender.

Here's my setup:

modem---router(amahi server and old laptop connected here)------switch(xbox and cablecard tuner)---other rooms
