Does anybody know which firmware version for the DIR-857 is the latest one for Europe?
For the U.S., already 1.03 was announced - but I'm still at 1.01. Isn't there a more recent version?

I've checked a couple of places and do not see anything later than v1.01.

The more I get acquainted to it, I find some (minor) issues. Was hoping, that a newer firmware release could solve some of them.

Is there any chance that 1.03 will be available for Germany some day?

I recommend that you directly phone contact DLink support, level 2 or higher as see. Most released dealt here are with NA region. I see not sure why other regions are not releasing anything. This router has been out here for a year now. I would recommend you get in touch with someone there and ask.

If you get in touch with them, let us know what they say.

I finally got an answer from D-Link support today. Not quite elaborated...

They told me that the firmware versions for Germany and USA are different and independent. - What I already knew, because that was the reason I asked.

Further they claimed that they can not provide information about a new firmware release for Germany.

I figured they would say something like that. Well i hope you were able to tell them of your problems. I'm sure eventually they will release something. I'll try and keep an eye out for any new EU versions.

The RU site doesn't seem to list any recent FW versions nor is the FTP site accessible. I see there is a Polish site has ALL EN files, however the main polish site doesn't list anything.

I reopened my support request and could dig slightly deeper.

They told me that they have no influence on what D-Link USA puts into the Firmware download (regarding the missing documentation). And that no update for my region was planned currently.

Well thats a shame. Ya, been told that each region pretty much is its own entity and when it comes to FW releases, seem like each region does it's own thing. Sorry to hear that. This is a good router. Shame that your region is not maintaining support on the FW side well.

Let us know if there something wrong with your router. Maybe some troubleshooting can help. If it's running well for you then, I guess you'll be ok until something does.

Yes it's a shame. Really.

I do believe that it's a nice piece of hardware. And at first sight it looks quite configurable and very flexible. But you better don't try.

For example, if you select Support for this router on the German homepage, the very first document you get describes how to configure a router as additional access point. And that's exactly what I bought it for!

But now, any question I ask Service gets slammed down with the statement that I use it as an additional access point and that was not the router was meant to be...

Ya, sorry to hear that other regions are not getting the same level of development than others.

I wouldn't normally recommend this however you could try to load the NA version as see if this would help you any. You'll probably see different channels as we only have 1-11 here. Might be worth a test to see.

Furthermore, I couldn't get one older notebook with an Intel 2200BG Wireless adapter into the WLAN for a long time. I knew it should be working, because the machine is dual boot and running Linux everything worked as expected. Under Linux it joined the WLAN during boot and the network was up before one could even login.

Under Windows XP it saw the WLAN but could not connect. I fought with it for many hours. I tried everything I could imagine, from playing with settings of the wireless adapter driver up to tuning configuration of the router. Someday, when I was nearly giving up, it finally started working. I think it was with the update of the router firmware to 1.01, but I'm not 100% sure right now .

Anyway, I was happy that I finally could remove the 10m LAN cable that I used to get this notebook into the network while still having some freedom to move around...

I was told a while back the the Intel 2200BG was an older model WiFi adapter which saw various issues. I think DLink told me that they were not supporting compatibility since it had been phased out by Intel a while back. I would recommend if your notebook has a USB port that is not used, you could still be mobile and not bound by a LAN connection by installing one of these:
DWA-160, DWA-162 and DWA-182 for example. Not sure what is available in your region however this would be worth upgrading from 54Mb WiFi to 300/450Mb and make use off what the 857 offers in WiFi connection speeds?

Yes, I got this impression by reading plenty of Internet postings about this topic, too. And Intel has canceled support for it.

Since the Notebook itself is an old and painful slow machine and the WLAN finally is working, I'm not going to waste money by upgrading it. The device is approaching the end of it's life and I don't know how long it will last working...
