New 655 Slow to Start Internet
« on: April 30, 2009, 08:39:10 AM »

Just upgraded from a DI-704p to the DIR-655 using cat 6 cabling (everywhere) and both wired machines have Broadcom 57XX integrated gigabit network cards (from Dell).

Noticed that when I hit Internet Explorer from either machine (one is XP Pro and the other Vista Ultimate) that the page comes up blank and it takes about 20 seconds for the home page to show.  With the former router, it was practically instantaneous.  My ISP is a cable system here in Canada with DSL connection using a Motorola Surfboard modem.

I did chat via email with D-Link support and they had me make a few adjustments to the router which made no difference at all so took the router back to its original settings.

I know things are flowing much faster with this router as imaging the XP box onto a WD World Book Mirror external HD connected via ethernet dropped from 12 hours down to 8.  Imaging the Vista box onto an external USB HD dropped about 3 hours off what it used to take.

Not that it's a huge deal, but is there anything I should be tweaking with the router or Norton Internet Security firewall to help bring the home page up faster?

Many thanks
Bruce

is this happening while you are imaging your machines? ie: heavy internal network transfers?

Try power cycling both devices. Power off the modem. Power off the gateway. turn on the modem. Wait for blocksync, then power on the gateway. The problem with modems is that they will register the first device plugged into them, ie: your previous router. If your modem has a reset button on the back of it, you may want to try that afterwards.

As well, you may want to upgrade to f/w 1.2b05, stay away from 1.3 unless you are fine with the consequences. consequence of not downgrading back to previous firmware if something doesn't work out for you.

if your still having issues, try setting the dns server to an OpenDNS server.

Thanks for the info lotacus.  The speed issue is when starting the computer - i.e. no other network traffic - powering up the box and heading into the internet.

Firmware is V1.21 and I will try the powering down and opening dns server.

Will try tonight at home.

What consequences?

Unforeseen ones. But specifically not being able to downgrade if something shall go wrong. I don't want to tell him to upgrade to 1.3 if he had intentions that may conflict with the new firmware release.

As well just a scare tactic to make him hesitate and traf release notes before he does go ahead. Maybe one day he may want to use a 3G connection. So its there if he ever does. :P

I'm tempted to upgrade but I'm restraining myself.

Try to uninstall Norton Internet Security on one computer and see whether it is faster in response (do not deactivate - just uninstall). Restart the computer.

If it helps, you may install it again while being connected to the new router and internet.
Sometimes Norton recognizes a new network when changing the router and shows this strange behavior.
