Slow/No Internet LAN or WiFi
« on: February 19, 2013, 05:28:06 AM »

Hi first time poster. I have been through quite a lot of threads to see if there was a solution to a problem that has just started happening.

I cannot get any internet connection or it is very slow when connecting through my DIR-645 router, this may be by wired LAN or via the WiFi. I am using multiple different devices (Wired/Wireless Laptop, Ipad, ipod, blackberry, wired/wireless Google tv, wired/wireless Xbox etc) to connect and all have same symptoms.
Due the qty of devices i have tried i can pretty much rule out that it is is a software problem on the device end, and all devices are setup to obtain IP etc via DHCP and all have been reserved an IP in the router.

I can connect a wired device direct to ISP gateway device and the internet is fine, loads fast, PTP is fast etc but if i introduce the router then it is dead. Lights are all on router as they should be, i have rest many times, updated firmware to latest (1.03) nothing helps.

I will give as much info as i think is required below as seen on other threads:

Located in the UAE
Wired and Wireless connection
Factory reset carried out, FW is 1.03, factory reset after update.

ISP is DU TELCOM, connection is supplied via a Cat 6 cable into a gateway device that handles IPTV, Telephone and internet. Internet connection is via Cat 6 cable out of gateway that i use to either connect to PC or Router WAN port.
24mbps down/1mbps up

Routers IP is 192.168.0.1, 255.255.255.0 (standard as it came)
IP supplied by gateway device to the WAN port of router is a public address 94.203.xx.x, 255.255.254.0

Internet setup is set to manual, DHCP
MTU - 1500

QoS is off
DNS relay is on
Advanced DNS is off
DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices set
All devices are set to get IP automatically
IPv6 is set to local link only
Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP enabled
uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming enabled
WAN Port Speed set to 100 (that is maximum speed of gateway port)

Wireless is mixed G and N (have also tried N only but my old xbox wifi is G)
Channel Width 20 only as using mixed G and N (was set for auto 20/40Mhz when in N only mode)
Channel is set for 13 currently as it is clear (used inssider) (have also used 1, 6 and 11)
Security mode WPA2, AES Only.
Turned off WPS

I have no antivirus/firewall running on any device. So many different devices anyway that problems cant be software

Have tested using on single devices at any one time still problems

I cannot access the ISP supplied hardware in anyway shape or form (i have tried evrything!). It would seem that it is an open device anyway, no ports blocked, no routing etc so basically bridged or DMZ'd or whatever there devices do.

I was thinking it may be a DNS problem, as if i go to google it comes up, and i search a term it searches but if you go to a link within the search then nothing, if you manual type an address in bar..nothing. utorrent connections extremely slow......but if all done direct to gateway then all is fine

My devices all point the DNS at 192.168.0.1 as i assume it uses the router as relay when option selected.
The DNS addresses are not filled in the boxes under internet/manual....should they be if set to DHCP?
They never have been previous and it used to work

I have tried entering google DNS in there with no effect.

If i connect gateway device direct to laptop then the IP is 94.203.xx.x, default gateway is 94.203.xx.x and the DNS servers are supplied from ISP

Hope that is enough to kick start some help?

Thanks

Kev

Link>Welcome!

Reset the router and set up from scratch using only one wired PC to test with. TURN OFF ALL other devices!

I can connect a wired device direct to ISP gateway device and the internet is fine, loads fast, PTP is fast etc but if i introduce the router then it is dead. Lights are all on router as they should be, i have rest many times, updated firmware to latest (1.03) nothing helps. What site did you get the v1.03 FW from?

I will give as much info as i think is required below as seen on other threads:

What ISP Modem make and model do you have?

Routers IP is 192.168.0.1, 255.255.255.0 (standard as it came)
IP supplied by gateway device to the WAN port of router is a public address 94.203.xx.x, 255.255.254.0

Internet setup is set to manual, DHCP
MTU - 1500
Check ISP MTU requirements, Cable is usually 1500, DSL is around 1492 down to 1472. Call the ISP and ask.

QoS is off
DNS relay is on. Try turning OFF DNS Relay after you have manually entered in ISP or Google DNS Addresses under Setup/Internet/Manual. Save Settings and reboot the router and the PC so the PC clears the DNS cache and re-acquires the new information.

Advanced DNS is off
DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices set
All devices are set to get IP automatically
IPv6 is set to local link only
Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP enabled
uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming enabled
WAN Port Speed set to 100 (that is maximum speed of gateway port). Try Auto

Hi thanks for reply

Firmware came from - http://www.dlink.com/us/en/support/product/dir-645-wireless-n-home-router-1000
That was the link i went through from the router web UI page, FYI my router revision is A1E

Modem/Gateway device - XAVI EG102

ISP call staff have no clue....i say MTU they say 'who?' anyway i can try a few combinations once i have tried other things. saying that it has been working for a couple of months on 1500 so i can see it being that.

Have tried manual entering DNS from ISP into manual section and disabled relay, i got the DNS that was displayed in the status page but i wonder if that changes ever...anyway i can try and i will also try with google DNS

Where was the DIR-645 purchased? Online or local store in your area?
Was this working before you updated FW?

Ok, so the only FW version I see for your region is v1.01 from here:
http://www.dlinkmea.com/products/?pid=DIR-645

I recommend doing the following:
1. Download the version listed above.

2. Disconnect the WAN port from the ISP Modem. Use 1 connected wired PC to the LAN Port on the 645. Do a factory reset of the router using the Tools/System page option and using IE only. Do not use Chrome please. After the router resets and skip the Wizard, send the .bin file for v1.01 using the routers FW upgrade page. Let it send and it should restart automatically. After it restarts, Do one more Factory reset of the router using the Tools/System page option. This time reconnect the WAN port cable to the ISP modem. While you do the factory reset, Power OFF the ISP modem for 30 seconds then power it back ON.

3. Configure the 645 from scratch and test.

Let me check the UK site version...

I see there is a v1.02 version listed on the UK site. I suppose you could try this first and see.

What is the HW version listed on the sticker under the 645? Any EU or ME or E listed here?

Let us know...

OK, so thats probably an EU region model. I suppose attempting to try the v1.02 on the UK site would be a start. Please follow the steps I outline for you.

Let us know how it goes.

Ya I checked with DLink and they recommend using what is most current on: http://www.dlinkmea.com/products/?pid=DIR-645

However since this seems to be a EU model, I think the EU FW should work.

There are differences between EU and U.S. FW and I think that could be whats causing the problem. I remember I did try a Russian FW after I bought my 645 just as a test and it did not work well with it loaded like that. So I swtiched back.

Let us know how the EU or MEA FW does. Hope one of these will help resolve this.

Ok, i have tried both the Euro 1.02  and the ME 1.01 both show identical symptoms.

It seems like once it has first reboot it is all working fine then after about 5 mins it dead again. pings time out, pages just hang while loading....i am almost sure its something to do with DNS but i have tried ISP auto, manual input, Google, openDNS nothing seems to work so maybe im off there..

I will see how it performs tomorrow...i have spent 3 nights on it now...if nothing i can do to make it better i will see if store will swap it.

Thanks for help so far

Ok, Ya if the problem still persists, possible problem with the 645 it self. Also could be a problem between the ISP modem and the 645 too. Wondering if the modem could be doing something when connected to the 645.  ???

I would ask if the store can test that particular router you have currently on there system there if they can to see if the problem appears for them as well. Need to narrow down where the problem could be.

Keep us posted.

I was reading through your posts and wonder if the problem is related to MAC address? Normally with a DHCP connection the data speed and other settings are keyed to the MAC address of your gateway device (modem). However some ISPs use the MAC of your computer (your laptop) when you first subscribe to the service. If this is the case, then you will find a direct connection with your laptop will work but not any other device (including the router). To solve this you need to tell the router to clone your laptop's MAC address (click Clone Your PC's MAC Address on the Network settings page in the web UI). I don't think many ISPs do this anymore but worth trying it?

Ok, well its been solved. It ended up being the switch in my apartment building at fault...but i found out a couple of things along the way.

A1E version of the 645 only work with euro firmware (currently 1.02) even though the unit is sold in the middle east it is a UK spec(i.e UK power plug) the middle east firmware is flaky at best (internet disconnects randomly), the US firmware (1.03) causes problems also.

You need the 1.02 to get the anywhere near the 300mb speeds advertised as the unit does not use the 40MHz on 1.01

Wireless is still unstable when using with iPad...i have seen some saying 1.03 of the US firmware address some of these issues so hopefully the EU models will get it

Anyway the main thing at present is the internet is back, thanks for all the help and sorry it took a while to get back to you all.
