USB drive issues with video playback
« on: March 11, 2013, 09:02:29 PM »

I'll try to be as clear as possible. so here's the deal.
when i set up my dir-826l; with a 1tb usb harddrive, i configured it through the storage section of the admin panel. everything was pretty much rosy. except for the fact that i am not a fan of being forced through the silly web access shareport. So i proceeded to map the drive as a network destination on my PC (running windows 8 )

i did this by going to run>\\192.168.0.1 and right clicking the drive as it shows up, and selecting map as network drive. no problem, i could read see the files and play them videos through VLC.
i then proceeded to set this up on two macbooks. no dice. command+K from the finder and trying to map \\192.168.0.1 does not work. neither does the full path of the drive (\\192.168.0.1\usb_A1)

so i decided to upgrade the firmware. i followed correct procedures, namely doing it from a wired connection, and restoring to factory both before and after flashing firmware.

now i'm at FW 1.03, and it's all gone down the drain.

My PC can still map the network drive, and see all the files, however when i open them with vlc nothing really happens. black screen and the file doesnt play. no error message.

I then tried the shareport web access. same result. the files are visible, but when i try to play a video, black screen and it does not play. same result from the macbooks (they were able to play the files through shareport web access just fine before as well)

now i'm at a loss. please advise! If any more details are needed, let me know!
thanks in advance!

addition from my second post:
i guess i should have stated i have now tried all these things on all versions of the firmware. namely 1.01, 1.02, and 1.03

i have also tried all steps while being connected to both the 2.4 network and the 5ghz network

So before you upgraded to v1.03, was the Windows PCs working and streaming video from the USB drive correctly and then you were not able to connect any Mac OSX PCs to the USB drive?

Did you happen to browse for the router or use SMB:\\192.168.0.1 when you used CMD+K?

Be sure to temporarily disable any 3rd party security programs while your setting this up, like firewalls or anti-virus.

Before upgrading to 1.03 the windows PC was streaming correctly through the shareport web access, and so were the macs. The PC was able to map the drive through explorer (a much more convenient way to browse the files for me.), however, the macs were not.
i have been disabling my nod32 on my pc, and the macs have no additional protection software.

i'm not sure what you mean by browse for the router. I assume you mean navigating to it through the finder. I tried that but to no avail. When trying to map with cmd+K it defaults to SMB, which i used.

could this have anything to do with the router i am forced to use from my ISP? (True Thailand). My connection comes in through cable to the True router, and then to the dir-826l through LAN.

additionally it should be noted that the shareport desktop application has never functioned for me at all. it can see the router but when i click it nothing really happens. And when i use the 'switch view' option, it says there are no files present.

EDIT: i just re-read your review of this router, and i would like to reiterate that the last few lines are exactly what i'm trying to do. still works on PC for mapping, but no longer for playback. MAC mapping never worked.

I'm going to recommend that you downgrade to either v1.02 or to the version that you had this working on. We are tracking a reported bug on v1.03 and it could be possible that other items are broke in v1.03.

I'll also recommend that you phone contact DLink support, please ask for Tier 2 or higher support as Teir 1 wont be able to help here I think.

When and if you decide to downgrade, please perform a factory reset before sending the FW file, then do one more after the FW has been send an the router comes back to ready then set up the router from scratch.

Keep us posted and let us know if you hear any information from DLink support.
