DIR 655 dropping signal.
« on: May 02, 2009, 08:30:47 PM »

My 1 year old 655 just started dropping the wireless signal out of the blue. I have to reboot it for it to redistribute the signal. At first it would only drop the signal once in a while. As in every few hours or a couple times a day. Now, a few days from the start of the problem,  it's become very bad and drops the signal every 5 minutes at least. I have a laptop and an Xbox 360 on the network. It has become a huge PITA. Again, this just started happening out of the blue. We changed ISPs (DSL to Cable) about 3 months ago but I don't think that would have anything to do with it. I upgraded the firmware to 1.21 and then 1.31 with no fix. Any ideas?

Had the same issue. This helped me:

Upgrade 1.31NA frimware.
Restore all settings to the factory defaults in Tools then System.
Manually configure your settings. DO NOT restore configuration from file.

Doing this has eliminated the continuous drops. But I am still having issues with my VoIP. It is very choppy in both down and upload.

Be sure to read the posts in "1.31 Offical Release". You will learn there are others having issues with 1.31.

1. Go to 1.31 (nu turning back to 1.2x ! )
2. Reset to factory defaults and manually configure the router (do not restore saved config0
3. Experiment with the antenaa setting and wireless channel. Dropping of connection can also be caused by a crowded channel or a neighbouring AP with (illegal?) signal boost.

I restored the factory default settings and manually configured the router settings, was able to get keep a signal for about an hour before losing the signal again. Just to clarify, the main PC that is wired to the router has no problems staying online. The problem consists solely of the wireless signal being dropped continuously. Could this be an overheating issue or some kind of hardware issue?

Remember that this started happening even before upgrading the firmware.

There is always a possibility that the hardware is faulty. Have you checked with a difefrent wireless client to eliminate the client's at fault?
