How can i used two DIR655 to boost signal?
« on: May 02, 2009, 09:51:21 PM »

i dont think its possible from what i have read here, but please clarify it for me.

Here is what i want to do;

1st 655; connected in to DSL modem with CAT 5, that is on the 1st floor.

2nd 655; some where on the 3rd floor on its own, not connected in to anything. But act as a signal repeater/ signal booster from the 1st 655.

Thus if can set this up, i can have a stronger signal on the 4th floor for my main PC,  and the rest of the house.

Is this possible?

Thanks in advance.

Unfortunately, you would need to find a couple of early hardware revision 655's with pre-version 1.05 firmwares. I believe this is when D-Link removed the bridging function all together. If you have an early hardware version of the 655's, you could try emailing tech support to see if anyone would email you an old v1.04 firmware? However, even if you could convince tech support to do that, I wouldn't expect any support for any issues you may have.

Other than that, the only way is to hardwire it, which as you have stated is not an option. Sorry...

Respectfully,

I was looking for a similar solution, but with a DIR-300 as the second "booster" lizzi555 walked me through a perfect way to do it. :) I hope he is cool that I pass this on!

Firstly, use a powerline setup to link the two units.
Come out of any LAN port of the first 655 into the first powerline unit
Go into one of the LAN ports (NOT the WAN) of the second unit from the second powerline unit.
Disable DHCP server on the second 655
Set all units to fixed channels, that do not interfere, or clash with other WLAN networks around you - for instance, first 655 to Channel 1, extension channel 5, (If you are using N), and the second 655 to channel 11 or higher.
Set the second 655 to the same LAN IP as the first 655.
Assign a different SSID to the second 655.
Secure the second 655 with the same level of encryption as your first, (But it does not have to be the same password, as it is a separate SSID)
Then you can access everything on your network by signing onto the appropriate SSID!
It is perfect - but someone please correct me if I miss something out - it works great for me, though!
Again, thanks to lizzi555 for this fix!

No, two devices in one network must not have the same IP address.
192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2 is OK

With two DIR-655 in 11N mode, it is possible to use the same SSID and encryption as if it is one wireless network.
But it is also possible to create to wireless networsk with different SSIDs and different encryption.

Thanks for jumping in and correcting my mistakes lizzi555 - I was hoping you would be around to help!  :)
