DIR-825 limited connectivity
« on: March 20, 2013, 09:58:41 PM »

Hi, I'm just trying to see if there's anyone that can help me with a very stressful problem with my family's D-Link router. A month and a half ago, we bought a new router to kind of upgrade and start anew with our new ISP. Everything for the first 1-2 weeks was amazing. Our D-Link router was doing everything we wanted it to, smoothly, and no trouble whatsoever. Then after that period of time, our wireless connection started having problems. The PCs, Laptops, Tablets, etc. were connected to our router wireless, but, it showed as limited connectivity. We at first thought that it was a small hiccup and a reset on the back would suffice. Next day same thing happened, and still today, it happens everyday about 3 times per day.

Router shows up as limited connectivity, but our signal does not drop. It's extremely weird, and after 2 weeks of contacting our ISP, they changed their modem to bridge mode, and changed the channel to see if it would fix the problem. Finally, they told us that nothing was wrong on their end, and our router has the problem. So we replaced our router from the store, got a brand new one, and it still keeps giving us limited connection! At this point, we have no idea what to do. I called support as well, and they can't find a solution either.

Sorry for the long post.. but I thought it would be a good idea to explain the whole situation

Things that we've done to attempt to fix the problem:
- IP Reservations for every device
- New channel on the wireless signal
- Resetting the router
- Change WPA/WPA2 authentications
- Change LAN wires that connect the modem and router
- Restore default settings
- Replace router

Any help is really appreciated. Thank you :)

The router we have is C1, Firmware 3.00. It is bridged, and wired connections seem to work when wireless signal does not.

Link>Welcome!

What region are you located?

"It is bridged, and wired connections seem to work when wireless signal does not."  ??? What do you mean by its' bridged?

Link>Wireless Installation Considerations
What wireless modes are you using? Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
Try single mode G or mixed G and N on 2.4Ghz and single mode N on 5Ghz?
Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
Try setting a manual channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear.
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto.
What wireless devices do you have connected?
Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use InSSIDer to find out. How many?

Try turning off Short GI, WLAN Partition, and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.
Enable WMM Enable Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

I am located in Florida, United States.
Um, by bridged, that's the connection between the modem and router that the IT guy from our ISP set up. It's called bridge mode or something like that. I'm not really sure how to explain it, sorry  ???

As for the wired connections part, when the router shows limited connectivity by the wireless connection, if I connect my computer directly to my router, internet works.
I hope I am making sense  :P

What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?

Understand now what is bridged.

What Connection type is being used under Setup/Internet/Manual? Might be DHCP or PPPoE. If PPPoE is set, make sure the ALWAYS ON option is selected on the router.

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.

Our ISP manufacturer is Arris, and the model number TG862. The connection is DHCP.

Ok...I presume you have phone service with this model modem? We seen various problems with Arris modems and using external routers:
http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=50682.0

Is the 825 getting a public IP address on the Status/Device Info/Wan section page?
Is the Primary and 2ndary DNS addresses being filled in? Are they ISP Addresses?

Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Link> Cat6 is recommended.

Maybe someone can review your router settings with you using Link> teamviewer if your interested. Its safe and secure.

Yes, we also have phone service with this model.

The router is getting a public IP address, and the Primary and Secondary DNS are filled in with ISP addresses as well. We've checked our cable and it is a cat6 (router came with a cable). I am also fine with the teamviewer idea, anything to fix the problem :)

I also opened the link and read the thread. I'll be contacting our ISP tomorrow to get help with setting up DMZ if you think it's necessary.

If the router is getting a full public IP address then DMZ isn't needed.

IF yo want, we can have a review of the router via Teamviewer. Send me a PM with User ID and PW and a time frame. Please be wired to the router with the PC using Teamviewer.
