How do I upgrade the firmware safely?
« on: March 22, 2013, 09:39:18 AM »

Been advised by cust support to upgrade the firmware on my DNS 320L, they have sent me a link to it and I have downloaded it onto my PC.

My NAS is hooked upto my router but my network is wireless, how do I upgrade the firmware safely as I have read you cannot up date the firmware over a wireless connection?

Hope some1 can help

Thanks

Darren

ShareCenter - Upgrading ShareCenter Firmware

It's not that you "cannot" update the firmware over a wireless connection, but rather you "should not". If you use a wireless connection and the connection is lost, which is more apt to happen with wireless, you can render the DNS-320 inoperable.

Please see the referenced sticky post from our FAQ board

Also...

  • The local PC hosting the firmware file should be wired to the LAN for the DNS-320
  • You should consider saving a "Configuration Settings File" (please search the ShareCenter FAQ
    board for more information)

Ahh right thanks, I understand, if I was to plug the NAS direct to my PC will that alter any of the settings within?

Yeah I've backed up my settings

Forget that, plugged it in and went for it........Firmware updated OK, seems to be running a bit quicker, will let you guys know in a couple o days, see if it has cured my issue with power on/off not working and the fan issue.

The Sharecentre Sync now backups to a user account rather than anonymous.... 1 issue fixed

  • The auto power on/off now works correctly in this latest firmware, NAS has auto powered off/on 3 times correctly to the schedule (I have also set it to power off after midnight, so that is working fine aswell).
  • Sharecentre works correctly with user accounts after the firmware update.
  • Fan warning (not being able to spin has been fixed and the fan is working correctly.
  • Maybe my perception but I think access via web is also quicker

Looking good so far.  ;D

Customer support sent me a temporary link to a beta firmware to see if it solved an issue I had. Not sure if I am ok posting the link.  Javalawyer,  is it ok? The link does state beta so not sure you want it fully posting.??

Please do not post openly on the forum.

D-Link Hungary created v1.02 beta some time back that customer support was internally distributing, but D-Link USA found the file to have serious bugs and was working fixing the issues.  What country did you purchase your DNS-320L as this information will determine where the firmware is from.  I'd like to know if this is a newer release.  ???

No worries, sent you the email from Dlink, I'm from the UK (North Yorkshire),  purchased the NAS from ebuyer. Hope that does not mean I have just installed a firmware with "serious" bugs in it!!

Thanks. . . I need to compare this to the prior Hungary version to see if the file is different. As I stated earlier, the prior Hungary release did contain serious bugs. I presume this is different given the different source, but I'll have to check.
