DIR-825 No Wireless Signal
« on: March 22, 2013, 02:35:15 PM »

Have had this router for about a year. Worked relatively well, some infrequent dropouts of the wifi over the course of the year, but nothing major. Now all of the sudden there is no wireless signal at all. Wired connections work fine, but cannot pick up any wireless connections anymore. Has been like this for a week now. I have tried power cycling, full factory resets, manual set ups, automatic set ups, auto channel scan, specific channels, changing settings from mixed mode, WPA on/off, 2.4 and 5 at the same time, and separately, etc... Nothing has worked so far. The only thing I can think of that makes sense to me is that the antennae have both stopped working. I have tried disconnecting and reconnecting them, is there any way to test them? Not sure if this is even possible?

INFO:

Hardware version B1
Firmware 2.02NA (says this is the latest version)
ISP is Shaw cable

Link>Welcome!

v2.07NA is the lastest from the main web site. There is a v2.09NA from the Canadian web site that fixes the 2012 Year date issue.

What region are you located?

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?
Check ISP MTU requirements, Cable is usually 1500, DSL is around 1492 down to 1472. Call the ISP and ask. Link>Checking MTU Values

Link>Wireless Installation Considerations
What wireless modes are you using? Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
Try single mode G or mixed G and N on 2.4Ghz and single mode N on 5Ghz?
Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
Try setting a manual channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear.
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto.
What wireless devices do you have connected?
Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use InSSIDer to find out. How many?

Try turning off Short GI, WLAN Partition, and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.
Enable WMM Enable Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

I am in Calgary, Alberta. ISP is Shaw and it is Cable internet. Modem is Motorola SB5102. Not sure any of this information is important since all wired connections are working fine. It is only the wireless that does not broadcast even an ssid. Using InSSIDer there are about 50 wireless signals picked up(apartment building), none of them mine. We have a cordless phone, but have always had one, and it never affected the router before. I have tried just about every combination of settings you have mentioned, nothing has worked. It is not that I cant connect to the network, it is that it doesnt seem like it is broadcasting a signal at all.

For the firmware, why would it not update from the settings page? When I check it from the Tools>Settings age, it says it is up to date.

Being that there is many WiFi near by, this is probably one reason as to your wifi drop outs and signal loss. We call this WiFi congestion. Your 2.4Ghz is heavily crowded. There is only 11 channels to use and having 50, well, you can probably start to understand the problem. Any other 5Ghz WiFi near by as well?

We have a cordless phone, but have always had one, and it never affected the router before. This phone on or near 2.4Ghz frequency?

I have tried just about every combination of settings you have mentioned, nothing has worked. It is not that I cant connect to the network, it is that it doesnt seem like it is broadcasting a signal at all.
If you have any 5Ghz WiFi devices, I would turn OFF the 2.4Ghz radio and test only with 5Ghz radio ON. Check InSSIDer application for any other 5Ghz radios near by and set a manual channel for one that isn't being used.

Another test you can do with both radios, go to Advanced/Adv Wireless and set the power output from HIGH to Medium or Low and test.

For the firmware, why would it not update from the settings page? When I check it from the Tools>Settings age, it says it is up to date. There is a update that you need to bring the router to a certain version level which your router is not at. I think v2.05, then 2.06 needs to be installed before applying v2.07. I don't know why this happened like this. And I'm not sure if you have to apply these later versions first before applying v2.09 or if you can directly load v2.09.

I think to be safe in doing FW updates to bring your router up to date of you chose to do this, I would recommend doing the following:
Download v2.05, 06, 07 and 09 FW files and unpack them. Get the files here:
http://www.dlink.com/ca/en/support/product/dir-825-xtreme-n-dual-band-gigabit-router?revision=ca_revb
Using IE only, Log in and do a factory reset under Tools/System and let the router come back to ready. Disable any 3rd party security programs on the PC and be WIRED only to the router. DO NOT perform this over a wireless connection please.
Skip any set up wizards and go directly to the Tools/Firmware section.
Load v2.05 first. Let the FW load and the router reboot and come back to ready.
Load v2.06 next. Let the FW load and the router reboot and come back to ready.
Load v2.07 next. Let the FW load and the router reboot and come back to ready.
Load v2.09 next. Let the FW load and the router reboot and come back to ready.
Log in and do one more factory reset under Tools/System and let the router come back to ready.
Set up the router from scratch.
Test again:
If you have any 5Ghz WiFi devices, I would turn OFF the 2.4Ghz radio and test only with 5Ghz radio ON. Check InSSIDer application for any other 5Ghz radios near by and set a manual channel for one that isn't being used.

Another test you can do with both radios, go to Advanced/Adv Wireless and set the power output from HIGH to Medium or Low and test.

If your not sure about all this, Maybe someone can review your router settings with you using Link> teamviewer if your interested. Its safe and secure.

Let us know how it goes.
