Is it possible to stream to a none Smart TV from the NAS somehow?

TV supports USB, HDMI etc but no ethernet port.

You would need something like DLNA-capable media renderer then.
D-Link Boxee Box, WD TV Live, Popcorn Hour or similar.
Heck, even Raspberry Pi would do with the right software.

Thankyou, I have a MK802iii which I am trying to see if I can get working, running android so might not get a UPnP AV compatible media player on it. There is a chance of getting Linux on it though..Worth a shot I think.

Also going to change my router (using a std sky router which I think is a bottle neck), thinking along the lines of the DIR-645 or 826L, I note these do not have modem inbuilt, anybody recommend a cheapish modem?

Why change the router? I personally have built my media network around a local LAN segment built on a cheap Gbit Eth switch. If you need a fast wi-fi link as well, then you might be better off with some 802.11n access point (or wi-fi router running in bridge mode i.e. with routing & NAT switched off).

E.g. if it can run VLC then you should be set.
PS If you can just connect to a shared NAS folder from your stick and play from there, you generally won't even need the DLNA. You will lose some convenience features like cover art and grouped playlists, though.

on android you can use xbmc for android (dowload one of the latest nightly from their forums) and it works greatly on my tablet and phone, tho I dont know how well   hardware decoding is supported  on  mk802III's rk3066 SoC.
another option is using UpnPlay app as front end  which call vlc or mxplayer for video playing (UpnPlay can play only audio but support using another player app for non audio files), for some reason I have some stutter on mxplayer (when the same file plays perfectly from a smb link) while vlc works greatly, even if it's still in beta.

How does it work? And what sort of software are you using on it? Any of the 3 XBMC distributions?
PS How much heat does this Pi generate?

The Pi hardly creates any heat, it gets warm that's about it.
