Cannot access old DNS-323 drive on Mac OSX
« on: April 17, 2013, 02:34:34 PM »

I am a photographer using a DNS-323 to archive my images on a pair of RAID1 drives.  Periodically, the drives fill up and I swap them out for fresh drives, placing one of the old ones in a secure off-site facility and keeping the other around in case I need to access some of the images via a SATA USB dock.

This used to work fine when I had a Windows machine, but I recently switched over to a new iMac which does not like the DNS-323 drives.  I've installed an EXT file system driver (Paragon EXTFS) but the drives still won't mount in Mac OSX 10.8, preventing me from accessing my images.

It can see the drives and the partitions, but it will not read them.

Can anyone offer any guidance?

Thanks.

We have a Mac and  Win 7 machine sharing a DNS-323.  While there is very little file sharing, I have opened a couple files that were created under Windows using my Mac mini (10.8.3).

What is the file format of the files you are trying to open?  Have you tried copying the files to a USB disk and tried to open on the Mac to make sure OS X can read them?

If you can provide more information, I will see if I can reproduce the problem.

The issue isn't the file format, it's the drive format from what I can gather.

The problem seems to be that the drive was removed from the DNS-323 (since it was full) and now I am trying to access it via an external SATA dock (instead of the DNS-323).  Since the drive is EXT3 (Linux) formatted from being in the DNS-323 the Mac doesn't want to read it.

On my old Windows machine I solved that problem by installing a third-party driver to allow the machine to read EXT3 drives.  I have done the same on the Mac (at $40 expense) but still cannot read it.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

EXT3 should not be the problem.

Do you see the drive with Finder under SHARED area?  If not, you may want to select Finder > Preferences to see what items are selected under the category Show these items on the desktop.  On my system I have checked External disks; CDs, DVDs and iPods; and Connected servers.

If you can see the drive after a restart we are making progress.

I can see the drive just fine, it simply will not mount.  It just says Disk Mount Problem:  Untitled (/dev/rdisk1s4) cannot be mounted.
There might be a problem with some files on this device or disk. This can happen if you removed the device or disk before all files have been written to it.
Please, use Disk Utility to verify and repair this volume.

Since you have the drive in a USB/SATA adapter it should be possible to use DFSEE  http://www.dfsee.com/ to check the disk for problems.

There is a Mac version available included in the full version which is free to use for a limited evaluation period.  The only thing I must warn you about is that the program works directly on the disk so read the documentation and be careful when using it.  We have been using it since 2004 as the main tool for work on clients disks and I have to say it has proved invaluable.
