DIR-825 5Ghz Wifi drops during heavy load
« on: April 21, 2013, 12:35:08 PM »

Hardware Version: C1
Firmware Version: 3.00

Wired works normally, and wireless is otherwise stable, except when under heavy load. E.g. if I initiate a large TimeMachine backup over wifi to my NAS, it will fail and the wifi will drop requiring a power cycle.

I have tried a similar transfer over ethernet (~1.7Tb) and although the transfer speed wasn't great (~10MBs, likely due to NAS drive bottleneck), it completed without a problem.

If I try copying ~150Gb over wifi, however, it barely lasts 30 minutes without dropping out.

Once the wifi drops, it still connects, but nothing works (I am unable to even connect to the web interface using the local IP). Other devices connected already via ethernet or 2.5Ghz still function normally, but the 5Ghz just fails, and if I try initiating a new connection to the 2.5Ghz it doesn't work until I power-cycle the router.

As far as overheating goes, I'm not sure it is an environmental issue... I have the router standing upright in an open space so there is good airflow around it.

Any thoughts on what to try? Is this a known issue? Or does it sound like faulty HW?

Thanks in advance!

Link>Welcome!

What region are you located?
Has a Factory Reset been performed?

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?
Check ISP MTU requirements, Cable is usually 1500, DSL is around 1492 down to 1472. Call the ISP and ask. Link>Checking MTU Values

Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1. Use IE, Opera or FF to manage the router.
Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual or under Setup/PARENTAL CONTROL/Set to>None: Static IP or Obtain Automatically From ISP.
Enable Use Unicasting (compatibility for some ISP DHCP Servers) under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking. This ensures each devices gets its own IP address when turned on and connected, eliminates IP address conflicts and helps in troubleshooting.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
If IPv6 is an option on the router, select Local Connection Only or Disable IPv6 options under Setup/IPv6.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking. Disable uPnP for testing Port Forwarding rules.
Turn off WISH, and WPS under Advanced.
WAN Port Speed set to Auto or specific speed? Some newer ISP modems support 1000Mb so manually setting to Gb speeds can be supported by the router. Advanced/Advanced Networking/WAN Port Speed
Set current Time Zone, Date and Time. Use an NTP server feature. Tools/Time.

Link>Wireless Installation Considerations
What wireless modes are you using? Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
Try single mode G or mixed G and N on 2.4Ghz and single mode N on 5Ghz?
Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
Try setting a manual channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear.
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto.
What wireless devices do you have connected?
Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use InSSIDer to find out. How many?

Try turning off Short GI, WLAN Partition, and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.
Enable WMM Enable Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

Not really relevant, as problem occurs even when router is used offline, not connected to modem.

Some things to try...
Already gone through this list from another thread

Any cordless house phones? - Nope
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use InSSIDer to find out. How many?
Already done. Selected least busy channels for both 2.5 and 5Ghz.

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.
Done and Done

Ensure Wireless adapter drivers for those devices that use them are up to date.

How far away are you from the router to the devices?
Are there still WiFi routers using the same channel that your on or is the channel open?

I am using a Mac running Mountain Lion, so no drivers to speak of. All OS software is up to date though.

How far away are you from the router to the devices?

Currently, about 1 meter. This is occurring regardless of distance (however I'm never more than about 10m from the router).

Are there still WiFi routers using the same channel that your on or is the channel open?

There is a lot of wifi in the area, so no channel will be totally clear, however the channels I am using are definitely the optimal. This isn't my first rodeo when it comes to configuring/diagnosing routers, this is why I believe it may be hardware related, if this isn't a common occurrence. (I have such bad luck buying tech... it always ends up having to be replaced. It gets very frustrating).

Try WPA2/AES Only.

It maybe that your area is congested with wireless interferences too. One thing you could try is, lower the power output from High to Medium or Low and test. If your having problems in the past like this, I would presume that your issue could be environmental and not HW.

I would try this router in a different location, someplace where there isn't any other WiFi and see it this problem follows. If it does, then I would recommend getting this router back to DLink for an RMA.

How long have you had this router?
