DSR-1000N major issues, dns timeouts
« on: May 13, 2013, 03:17:42 AM »

Hi everyone,

I have a DSR-1000N with the latest firmware and I'm having lots of problems with it.  The issue is that I am having consistent DNS timeouts it seems every few minutes.  Lots of times the router just sits there thinking about loading a web page and then after about a minute just gives the normal "Page Cannot Be Displayed" error.

This happens regardless of what DNS settings I put into the router.  The issue is even more consistent when on wireless.  I started a case with D-Link a while back and they sent me a BETA firmware that's not on the website and that has helped a bit, but still having problems  :'(

Any ideas??

Link>Welcome!

What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on routers web page under status.
What region are you located?
Are you wired or wireless connected to the router?
Has a Factory Reset been performed?

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?
Check ISP MTU requirements, Cable is usually 1500, DSL is around 1492 down to 1472. Call the ISP and ask. Link>Checking MTU Values
For DSL/PPPoE connections on the router, ensure that "Always ON" option is enabled.

Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1. Use IE, Opera or FF to manage the router.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.

Hey Furry, here goes;

Hardware Version: A1
Firmware Loaded: 1.06B84_WW
Region: Asia Pacific (Australia)
Wireless has the issue, Wired seems to be OK.
Factory reset done about 15 times

ISP: Westnet, ADSL 8mb.
Netgear DM111P modem (modem only, no firewall function)
MTU: 1492, manually set

I have a DHCP pool set from 192.168.10.100/199.  DNS set to my ISP.  Only my file server has a static IP, which is outside of my DHCP scope.

It seems that whenever my laptops try to connect to this via wireless, it's hit and miss with a page displaying or not.  Lots of times I just have to refresh the page and even that sometimes doesn't work.  What is even strange is when I connect my DAP-2590 to it and use that as the wireless, it continues to have the drop outs, but when using a wired connection it's fine.

Pain in the butt.  I bought this thinking it would be a suitable replacement for my DFL-800 and DAP-2590 but it's not looking like it at the moment.  Hopefully a new firmware will be out soon.

I'm up for any other suggestions;
PS, I'm an ex certified D-Link DPS Wireless, Switching, and Response Point from a few years back so I know my d-link stuff quite well.  Feel free to hit me up with some suggestions that the average user wouldn't have a clue to do, or ****ounce.  Haha.

Links>Wireless Installation Considerations and Managing Signal Congestion
Ensure the default (dlink) SSID name is changed. Can be anything and not something thats already in use by any neighboring WiFi routers.
What wireless modes are you using?
Try single mode G or N or mixed G and N?
Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
Try setting a manual channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear.
What security mode are you using? Test with out any security temporarily, do the devices connect then? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto.

Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use InSSIDer to find out. How many?
Try turning off Short GI, WLAN Partition, and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it.
Enable WMM Enable.

The wireless mode is g/n, but I have tried both G and N on their own.  Tried both 20/40 and 20 MHz on its own as well, no luck.  Channel 6 and channel 11 were used as there were no other networks on those channels.  Tried all wireless security modes, still had issues.  Even tried my DAP-2590 plugged in and had issues, weird.

There are no cordless phones or microwaves around as everything is stored in my server cabinet.  Guess I'll keep the dfl-800 rocking till a new firmware comes out.

You'll need to phone contact your regional D-Link support office and get some help on this. This maybe an issue with the DSR unit. Ask for level 2 or higher support.

Let us know what they say.

I thought I'd revive an old thread and advise that the latest firmware (1.09B46_WW) has fixed the wireless problem!  Now I'm happily using a firewall, switch and wifi all in one device and only using 1 power socket!
