Author Topic: Linksys WMP54GS adapter with D-Link DIR-655 wireless router  (Read 6956 times)

I just upgraded to a DIR-655.  I have a couple machines with new D-Link Wireless-N adapters, and they work fine (no surprise there).  I also have a Lenovo laptop that works perfectly.  However, I have two older machines using Linksys WMP54GS adapters, and can't get it working.

In both cases, the Linksys adapters report that they can connect to the access point, but the Internet cannot be found.  Running IPCONFIG reveals that neither machine is being assigned an IP address (they both still show 0.0.0.0).

On one of the machines, I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers, and got the same result.

I have security enabled (WPA Mode = Auto (WPA or WPA2)) and (Cipher Type = TKIP and AES).

As I said, the adapter appears to have no trouble associating with the access point.  The issue seems to be getting address assigned.  A DHCP issue maybe?

I haven't upgraded the firmware yet, and it's running 1.20.  Should I upgrade?  Will that solve a known issue such as I have described?  To what version?

Thanks!

Try upgrading to 1.22beta05.

And what's the OS on the latops? (when XP: which SP's installed)

Vista is stupid. The connection manager should never say it has access to the access point if it doesn't have an ip address. Fact is, the router is blocking it for some reason, either due to incompatible security or transmission modes, you have DHCP disabled, you have a static ip set for the adapters, your DHCP scope is too short, therefore it cannot assign anymore ip addresses.

Check all those first.

I looked at the model you have and it supports a maximum security mode of WPA AES. Disable mixed modes, since it's going to drop all the connections to that anyways.

Also, see if they will connect with no security first.

As well, in some instances, your firewall could be blocking the communication. I have ran into this too many problems with Norton, Zone Alarm, and McAfee throughout my tech calls.

The linksys adapter will have no problems with WPA. On the other hand, XP without SP2/3 will not work with WPA enabled on the router.

Thank you!  This was very helpful.

First of all, I upgraded the firmware to 1.22b5 with no issues.  BTW, my hardware version is A4.

The two machines causing problems are running Windows XP SP3.  They still couldn't connect after the firmware upgrade.

So I disabled security entirely, and STILL couldn't connect.  The strangest part is that neither machine could even see the wireless network, though I was broadcasting (and all my other machines can see it).

I then changed the 802.11 Mode from b/g/n to just g/n.  At the same time, I turned channel scanning off and just took the default of channel 6.  Then both machines were able to see the network, and connect to it!  So I turned security back on, and both machines were still able to connect (with WPA2).

I'm not sure which change caused it, but I'm going to leave it alone for now since it's working.

Thanks for the assistance.
