Random disconnects/drastic speed drops

Hello,

I had this router for a while and only started using it again in the past few months due to switching providers. Old router had to be returned back to rogers.

So a few days ago I started to receive random drops in speed or disconnects every few minutes. I have no change any of my settings hardware or software which I have used for 2 months. My PC and laptop is connected to the router through ethernet cables. When the laptop or PC is connected directly to the modem I will not have problems. I even switched around the cables to check each cable is fine and adjusted the antennas. After I adjusted the settings using this:

Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1. Use IE, Opera or FF to manage the router.
Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking. This ensures each devices gets its own IP address when turned on and connected, eliminates IP address conflicts and helps in troubleshooting.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking. Disable uPnP for testing Port Forwarding rules.
WAN Port Speed set to Auto or specific speed? Some newer ISP modems support 1000Mb so manually setting to Gb speeds can be supported by the router. Advanced/Advanced Networking/WAN Port Speed
Set Time and Time Zone under Tools/Time.

What wireless modes are you using? Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
Try single mode G or N or mixed G and N? Mixed
Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
Try setting a manual channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear.
What security mode are you using? WPA-Personal
What wireless devices do you have connected? 2 cell phones and an ipod
Any cordless house phones? 1
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use InSSIDer to find out. How many? 6
Turn off WISH, and WPS under Advanced.
Try turning off Short GI, WLAN Partition,and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.
Enable WMM Enable Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.
Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

The disconnects/decrease in speed will only occur every 30 minutes on average with settings from quote, but still is not good enough. Any ideas what might be going on?

Edit: Firmware is 1.35 and I have done a factory reset then adjusted the router settings.

  • What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
  • Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on routers web page under status.
  • What region are you located?
  • Are you wired or wireless connected to the router?
  • Has a Factory Reset been performed?


Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
  • What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
  • What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?
  • Check ISP MTU requirements, Cable is usually 1500, DSL is around 1492 down to 1472. Call the ISP and ask. Link>Checking MTU Values
  • For DSL/PPPoE connections on the router, ensure that "Always ON" option is enabled.
  • Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Link> Cat6 is recommended.

If the router has been working up to lately, and now your seeing issues, I recommend that you have your ISP check the cabling going to the ISP modem, check signals. Check for t.v. line splitters and remove them as they can introduce noise on the line and lower the signal going to the ISP modem. It's possible that your service was good up to a point then something has happened. The router operation is dependent upon getting good data flow from the ISP modem and the modem is dependent upon getting good signal from the ISP Service.

Checked with ISP and everything seems to be fine on their end... After testing for a few days the only problem I have now is high pings when gaming. Ping reaches to 700-800 at random times when its normally 20-50. But like I said earlier when directly connected to modem everything is normal...

Never had any line splitters.

Just steam games (counter strike global offensive, team fortress 2, and dota 2) and league of legends.

Also when I enable QoS engine and traffic shaping the games will have regular ping of 20-50 ms, but regular browsing has tremendous lag. When QoS engine and traffic shaping is disabled games would return to 500-700 ping, but regular browsing is normal speed. I have tried enabling traffic shaping and disabled "Enabled QoS engine", but that would provide lag spikes in gaming and browsing.

Basically I can always only do one option, unlike 2 weeks ago where both were working fine with QoS engine and traffic shaping enabled.

Wonder if you should set up some QoS rules, one for your gaming PC and one for ALL other devices.

Can review this for examples:
Gaming and QoS for XBL

It's mainly for XBL however can be used for other games and applications.

Assuming I have setup the QoS rules properly, browsing the web would be normal with a random lag spike once an hour that lasts for about a minute or two. Gaming the ping would be stable 1/3 of the time around 30-50 ms ping and 2/3 of the time between 50-250 ms ping.

The rules I have used:

Checked box.
Name: PCOne (this could be whatever I want I would assume)
Priority:1 (highest priority correct?)
Protocol: Any (didn't notice any difference between any and both)
Local IP Range: IP addresses from DHCP Reservation list

Everything else is default, since I think the port 3074 is not used by PC. I have tried to use "65.52.0.1 - 65.55.255.2554" just to be sure, but would get an error.

Any other ideas you might have?

Everything else is default, since I think the port 3074 is not used by PC. Use 0 and 65535 for PORT Ranges. If any is used then Port and Remote IP addresses should be automatic

I have tried to use "65.52.0.1 - 65.55.255.2554" just to be sure, but would get an error. Use 0.0.0.1 to 255.255.255.254 for Remote Port Range if not already filled in.

Any other ideas you might have?

255.255.255.254 is an invalid end point for me, so I used 255.255.255.255. After using QoS rules for a bit with the changes you've suggested, gaming connection would be stable with a random lag spike once or twice an hour. However browsing connection would only be stable for the first 30-60 minutes. After the brief duration, the router would have to be restarted or I have to turn off QoS engine and traffic shaping to have a stable browsing connection.

The problem (having to choose between browsing and gaming) occurs again.
