I was hoping someone might be able to shed some light on this as I'm not able to find and solid information on this.

I'm trying to setup a VPN connection from my computer at home to my computer at my studio. All the windows settings are setup properly but the connection hangs at verifying user name and password.

The computer at the studio is the computer currently behind the DIR-655 and the router there has port 1723 forwarded but I'm unable to achieve a connection to the computer.

Is there something else that needs to be done in the router? I'm fairly new to the router I only bought it a couple of weeks ago and its hardware ver A4 with firmware 1.21.

Does your internet gateway device also have the necessary port settings forwarded to the DIR?

The router is fine. The fact that it is stuck on verifying username and password, suggests that the two computers can communicate with each other
Your problem is authentication settings, or encryptions settings between the host and the client. This used to happen to me a lot when I testing VPN connections. I forget what I did to solve it, sorry. I am sure if you went to windowsITpro website and searched a how to for setting up a VPN, it should work fine.

I did my setup according to this guide

minus the L2TP/IPSEC for the time being.

I spent a great deal of time playing around with this last night and I also came across this website where someone seemed to have the same issue.

One of the people replied with the following suggestion.

Under Advanced and Virtual Sever setup two virtual servers.

The first virtual server should point to ip hosting your vpn connection. Set the protocol as "other" with traffic type # 47. This doesn't forward any ports but will allow GRE traffic.

The second virtual server should also point to the ip hosting your vpn connection. Public and Private ports sets to 1723. Set the protocol as TCP traffic type 6.

Now I tried this and it seemed to connect fine, but I'm still having problems browsing the other computers shared files.

I guess my last question would be is this the only way its meant to work? Through the Virtual Server Windows? I'm a bit confused as to why that would work and the port forwarding I did was not working.

Because PPTP requires TCP port 1723 as well as GRE to be forwarded.

Try accessing you other computers by IP it will work, NETBIOS name resolution doesn't happen over routed connections (read VPNs), setting up a WINS server is a friendlier work around.

Yeah I'm aware of the NETBIOS name resolution problem what I have been using is \\192.168.2.45\Public
but still no go.

I also understand that PPTP needs port 1723 but I'm still confused as to why it has to be done in the Virtual Servers window as opposed to just right in the port forwarding window.

Also I can completely remove the GRE entry in the Virtual Servers window and it connects fine as well, minus the not being able to browse the computers files.

Well the biggest thing to be said now is that no matter what we do on the router that doesn't effect specific traffic within the tunnel.

Can you ping other PCs?

Are you on the same network as the other PCs?

Is your tunnel configured to proxy ARP?

As for the entries, I thought you had just said that is what had made the difference?  Oh well it doesn't matter now.

Did you mean SIP the option under Application Level Gateway (ALG) Configuration?

If so yeah that and the other three options are checked off.

Can't ping the PC that I'm tunneling into but they are on the same network.

What I meant when I said I removed the GRE entry under the Virtual Servers window was that I just removed that Virtual Server entry not the one for port 1723. Its the Virtual Server for port 1723 that is letting me authenticate and pass the Verifying User name and pass. If I remove that entry as well it no longer works.

Well that did it! haha I can ping and browse the other computers files without a problem.


Just as a final sanity check for me Iv never used a router that contained Virtual Servers, are these basically the same as port forwarding, its still odd to me that when i use port forwarding it doesn't work but when I use Virtual Servers it does.
