I have an Ubuntua 12.04 server attached to my DIR-655's network (it is an Amahi server). I used the suggested ip address of 192.168.0.10 for the Amahi's IP. It works, but does not show up in the attached computers on the router's Web UI. All my other wired computers (included reserved DHCP addresses) are listed under the active LAN sessions in the router's Web interface. All wireless DHCP devices are listed as well. However, the Amahi does not appear (even though it is able to access the LAN and Internet). If I allow the router to assign an IP to the Amahi (using DHCP instead of Static)then it shows up in the D-Link interface (but the server must have a fixed IP so this is not a long-term solution - and to reserve it in the router isn't practical because I'd have to reinstall the server's OS - blame Amahi). My concern is that port forwarding does not work when using the IP outside of the default DHCP range - but it works fine when the router chooses an address for the server. How can I assign an IP to the server that is not in the router's DHCP range but does allow me to see it in the interface and also allows me to forward ports (such as 21 for FTP)?
This is my first Linux machine so it very well may be that I need to change something in its network settings to make it display in the router's UI. However, I don't know what that might. And every other network device plays nicely...
