Blinking red drive lights flash continually
« on: June 19, 2013, 08:56:51 AM »

My DNS 325 drive lights have been blinking red (amber?) for several days even when the NAS is not being accessed. The drives both scan successfully and pass the extended S.M.A.R.T. test. The drives in the NAS are two WD Red 3T set up in a RAID 1. I can access them and the music files stored on the drives play when I click on them. I noticed the blinking lights after checking my system following a very brief power outage (1 or 2 seconds). My NAS is in a spot that I can't see at all times, so I don't know if the lights may have been blinking before. I have restarted the NAS from the Share Center web interface, but the lights continue to blink. Even with my computer off, which would be the mail source trying to access the DNS-325, the lights continue to blink. Firmware is 1.03. I would love to get those lights to stop blinking. Any ideas?

Direct from the manual.

"They will illuminate AMBER if a drive has failed"

I have the same drives and do not have any issues.  Good luck.

Just an idea:

Smart checks the hardware status of the drive. But nevertheless the hardware is 100% ok, it is possible that your mirror is no longer consistant. (I hope your drives are mirrored) Or the filsystem on the drive has bad blocks. (Caused by the power drop in the middle of a write cycle)

If the NAS does not provide a repair tool (like file system check) to fix this, the only way to solve that problem is to backup the NAS, reformat the drives. Create the logical volume again and restore the data.

If there is a problem on the filesystem, it can happen that the backup on one or more files fails.
This files are lost, but all the rest should be ok. I hope your backup tool is able to continue after bad files.

As long as you do not use the broken files, your NAS seems to be consistant.

As I said, just an idea!

Thanks to those who offered a reply. Tech support at Dlink has determined that my DNS-325 itself is defective. Everything they had me try, including putting a new drive in, still resulted in amber BLINKING lights for both the right and left drives. The NAS was under warranty so DLink is sending me a replacement. Still, it cost me $18 to send a defective product back to them which is a little irritating. And the amount of time I spent on hold was unbearable!! For one of my calls, I waited on hold for 91 minutes and then as I was finally being transferred to the technician handling my case #, I was disconnected!
