Hi,

Since upgrading to this new router, a particular host (SERVER01) becomes unreachable at random times. Upon rebooting the router, I am able to ping the host using its IP (192.168.0.100). But after 15-20 minutes, the host becomes unreachable from other LAN computers. I am unable to ping the host by its IP or Name. I am however able to ping the host through the router's ping utility (Tools -> System Check) page. Rebooting the router solves the problem, although only temporarily.

It seems like the router isn't propagating ARP reliably. This issue wasn't present with the old router and nothing has changed in the network configuration of other LAN computers.

Windows ping result:

• What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
• Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on routers web page under status.
• What region are you located?
• Are you wired or wireless connected to the router?

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations

• What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
• What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?
• Check ISP MTU requirements, Cable is usually 1500, DSL is around 1492 down to 1472. Call the ISP and ask. Link>Checking MTU Values
• For DSL/PPPoE connections on the router, ensure that "Always ON" option is enabled.

Router and Wired Configurations
Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1. Use IE, Opera or FF to manage the router.

• Turn OFF ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options, Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
• Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual or under Setup/PARENTAL CONTROL/Set to>None: Static IP or Obtain Automatically From ISP.
• Enable Use Unicasting (compatibility for some ISP DHCP Servers) under Setup/Internet/Manual.
• Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking. Link>Finding Faster DNS Addresses using Name Bench
• Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking. This ensures each devices gets its own IP address when turned on and connected, eliminates IP address conflicts and helps in troubleshooting.
• Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
• If IPv6 is an option on the router, select Local Connection Only or Disable IPv6 options under Setup/IPv6.
• Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.
• Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking. Disable uPnP for testing Port Forwarding rules. Enable IPv6 Multi-cast Streaming for routers that have a Media Server option. Disable IPv6 Multi-cast Streaming if IPv6 or Media Server is not being used.
• Turn off WISH, and WPS under Advanced.
• WAN Port Speed set to Auto or specific speed? Some newer ISP modems support 1000Mb so manually setting to Gb speeds can be supported by the router. Advanced/Advanced Networking/WAN Port Speed
• Set current Time Zone, Date and Time. Use an NTP Server feature. Tools/Time.
• Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Link> Cat6 is recommended.

I don't think the ISP config is relevant here. This is really a LAN issue, nothing to do with the WAN... If I remove the WAN cable from the router the issue persist.

- Under Setup/PARENTAL CONTROL/Set to>None: There is no parental control on that router
- Enable Use Unicasting (compatibility for some ISP DHCP Servers) under Setup/Internet/Manual: Not relevant (Not an ISP/Modem problem).
- Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking: Already On.
- Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router: All my devices are DHCP reserved.
- Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address: One of the device was static, turned it to dynamic.
- If IPv6 is an option on the router, select Local Connection Only or Disable IPv6 options under Setup/IPv6: This router does not support IPv6.
- Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall: I do not have that option.
- Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking: Already On.
- Forwarding rules. Enable IPv6 Multi-cast Streaming for routers that have a Media Server option. Disable IPv6 Multi-cast Streaming if IPv6 or Media Server is not being used: I do not have these options.
- Turn off WISH, and WPS under Advanced: WPS is turned off. WISH is not supported.
- WAN Port Speed set to Auto or specific speed?: Auto, but not really relevant (Not an ISP/Modem problem).
- Set current Time Zone, Date and Time. Use an NTP Server feature: Date/time is ok. Using ntp1.dlink.com
- Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure: Tried it, but again not an ISP/Modem problem.

I see that the computer isn't event listed in the arp -a command. The router is clearly having issues with ARP propagation.

One workaround I found is to add a static arp entry in Windows (arp -s 192.168.0.100 00-22-91-1C-C9-91), and add a static DNS entry in the "C:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc\host" file to be able to access the computer by its name.

But really, I'm pretty sure this is a a firmware bug in the router. The static arp entry is a temporary workaround, not a permanent solution. Adding a static arp entry on every computer on the LAN doesn't make sense.
