Hi all,

I own a DIR-645, have configured it, but I can't get the Guest zone working properly.
I hope someone can help, that is very much appreciated! 

Here is the information...
DIR-645 with the latest (?) firmware 1.04.

I have a ISP router/modem with DHCP, so the DIR-645 is my second router in the network.
I found this

and used it to configure the DIR-645.

My LAN IP is in range 192.168.100.x
The ISP router/modem is 192.168.100.1
The DIR-645 is 192.168.100.100

The setup/internet settings are set to Dynamic IP (DHCP). Is that ok???

The wireless settings for the first SSID seems to be fine. Using some mobile phones I can connect to the interface and have access to the other devices on my LAN and also can connect to the internet (apps, webbrowser).
So far so good...

Next step was to enable the Guest zone in advanced/guest zone settings.
Router IP: 192.168.7.1
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
I have connected a mobile phone to the Guest zone SSID.
With or without the option for "Enable Routing Between Zones" checked, I get the same results:
- IP received, in range 192.168.7.x
- no access to internet (webrowser, apps)
- no access to other devices on my LAN (that is ok)
- ping to 192.168.7.1 is ok

With the option for "Enable Routing Between Zones" checked, I get:
- ping to 192.168.100.100 (IP of DIR-645) is ok
- ping to 192.168.100.1 (IP of ISP router/modem) is ok


I hoped by enabling the Guest zone, I could have a seperate wireless connection with only access to the internet. But I can't get it to work.
What am I doing wrong? Some here who can help?

The Guest Zone feature depends on the use of the WAN Port in main host router mode. When in Wired AP mode, the Guest Zone feature will not work in this mode.

• What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?
• If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems: Link>Double NAT and How NAT Works. If the modem can't be bridged then see if the modem has a DMZ option and input the IP address the router gets from the modem and put that into the modems DMZ.

It is Thomson TWG870U

• If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems: Link>Double NAT and How NAT Works. If the modem can't be bridged then see if the modem has a DMZ option and input the IP address the router gets from the modem and put that into the modems DMZ.

It has an option that is called "bridge disable". But it has 4 ethernet ports of which I use three... So, I think I need the current configuration. It does not have DMZ.

But what if I use the whole DIR-645 as a "guest" interface, can that be done?
Only connection to the internet, no connection to my LAN.

The TWG780U is a Gateway Modem and router so it has built in router features. I think this modem has built in WiFi aswell? If it does, you could use it's onboard WiFi either as the main Wifi or as your Guest Zone Wifi and then connect the 645 up as your 2ndary Wifi for your non-guest Wifi usage using the following:

Yes, the TWG870U has a built in WiFi which is currently used as my main WiFi, but is has no settings for a Guest wifi.

I already used the Turning a router into an AP description to setup and connect the DIR-645.

Would it be possible to use the main WiFi of the DIR-645 to create a Guest WiFi? Or even the whole DIR-64, including the wired LAN ports.... It should be in a different IP zone, I assume. How could that be done?

I tried it but without success... unfortunately.
I have connected the DIR645 with cable from WAN on DIR645 to LAN of my first router.
My first network is in range 192.168.100.x
My first router is 192.168.100.1
To be sure the DIR645 has an unused IP, I gave it 192.168.100.100 (instead of the mentioned 192.168.32.3)

I have connected, to one of the LAN ports by wire, a laptop to the DIR645.
Under windows it shows with ipconfig the following data for the laptop:
IPv4 address: 192.168.33.10
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Default gateway: 192.168.33.3 (this is the DIR645 router IP address)
DNS Server: 192.168.100.1  or 192.168.33.3 (depends on the DNS relay option)

I can't get internet access for the laptop.
I do can ping the first router (192.168.100.1) and also a NAS on the first network (192.168.100.14).
Even, with the windows explorer on the laptop I can browse through the maps on the NAS.

I also tried a Android mobile phone. But with same result. The phone gets an IP address, but no internet access.

So, I think the problem is in the IP address of the default gateway and/or DNS server.
I checked the settings in the DIR645 over and over, these are really set to 192.168.100.1

Do you have any idea?

Try setting the Gateway and the DNS addresses to the IP address of the host router and test? Test with DNS Relay ON and OFF.

Just to get things clear... I have set the IP address of the DIR645 (Setup - Network Settings) to 192.168.33.3 and the IP addresses of the DNS and gateway are set to 192.168.100.1 (Setup - Internet - Manual Internet Connections Setup).

The strange thing is that under Window7, the laptop gets DNS and gateway IP address of 192.168.33.3

So, if understand your idea right to set DNS and gateway of the DIR645 to 192.168.100.1 the IP of my first router. That is what I did, but the ipconfig /all command under windows7 shows 192.168.33.3 for the gateway and 192.168.33.3 or 192.168.100.1 for the DNS, depending on the DNS relay option.

Is this what you meant, or did I misunderstood your idea?

Yes, I think the Gateway needs to be pointed to the main host router. Try it with DNS relay OFF.

yes, I tried but no success.
I think I leave it for now, use the DIR645 as additional switch/AP. Unfortunately without the GuestZone.

Just may not be possible on this model router in that mode with Guest Zone since it's dependent upon the WAN port connection.

If you need a 2ndary solution, installing a DIR-601 as an AP designated for Guests could be used. I have one in AP mode now but it's a primary AP.
