I'm sorry for the n00b question here...

Have had my DNS-323 for a few years in a Raid 1 configuration, working perfectly with (2) 750GB drives. Last week, one started making some "I'm dying" noises and logging on indicated that it was not reading/was dead. Fast forward to now, I bought (2) new 1TB drives and have installed. When installed, one showed up as 1TB, the other as 0...I then proceeded to format per essentially fresh install directions (I copied all data to another HD before doing a fresh install, BTW).

In any case, I reformatted as directed and checked status...the D-Link utility indicates 2 total drives installed, yet only shows details for 1 physical disk (see attached screenshot). I don't remember this being the correct status within the utility. I thought info for both disks was shown, even though there is only effectively 1 in use, while the other is mirrored.

(screen shot is attached...I shouldn't say it's quite the n00b question as I'm very proficient in computers, networking, etc...this unit has just needed near zero maintenance, and I wan't to double check with those smarter than me about whether or not it is configured correctly, or I have a bad NAS slot)

I just checked all of our DNS-323s set to RAID1 and they all show the two disks so you have a genuine problem.

What firmware version do you have on your nas, all ours are at 1.08 level.

You should check that there isn't any dust/fluff in the unit that might be causing the problem on one drive - it can happen when the unit has been in use for some time and the drives are replaced.

Do both drive LEDs indicate that the drives are healthy?

Other than that you could use the Seagate disk tools to check each drive (use a USB/SATA caddy or adapter) just in case one is faulty - we have had a few DOA so we test before installing them now.

Those are the first things on our test routine before we get to such things as opening the unit and testing the boards.

Thank you for the quick followup! I'm running firmware 1.07. I haven't checked for fluff, but will do as a precautionary measure. And yes, both drive lights seem to be working/indicating copying properly. Previously when one was going bad, the light blinked for a bit, then went off and spun down the bad hard drive in the bay. Seems (or at least I thought) to be working as it should be...but apparently not.

This sucks....enclosure has been worry-free for quite some time, but I have no attachment to this particular model if its taking a **** on me.

Wanted to follow up in case anyone else runs into the same/similar issue. I updated my firmware to 1.10, blew out the dust (near nothing) and put the hard drives back in - both showed up just fine as they should/have in the past. Ran disk check via the D-Link software, both checked out 100%. Tried to mount/access NAS as I usually do (desktop link as a mounted hard drive volume), and the computer couldn't find it no matter what I tried (though I could log in via web interface with no problem). D-Link utility couldn't find anything either.

Rolled back the firmware to 1.08 as ivan indicated he is running, drives show up, display, mount and access flawlessly, as they did in the past, with no further adjustment needed - Thank you for your help!!!

Next (and unrelated) question - I've never used the iTunes library feature as it always hangs up when scanning. Any fixes? I let it scan my root music folder (which is large 200GB+) through the web interface, and it generally hangs at around 36% scan (I've gotten it to the 90%+ in the past, but that's a distant memory). I read somewhere years ago this was due to corrupted mp3 files - I fixed them all in a tedious process...still wouldn't go to 100%. Is the folder size too big? Containing file types the NAS doesn't like/hangs up on (podcasts, perhaps)? Is the NAS going to sleep and hanging...?

Any thoughts/suggestions, or is this just a feature I should resolve not to use? (would be nice as I run a HTPC and 2 separate desktops...requiring a jerry-rigged iTunes interface)

I'm happy to hear that you have everything physically up and running.

Sorry I can't help with the iTunes problem because we don't use it here - IT service company for industry.  One thing you could do is search the forum for related posts on iTunes problems, you might find a solution that works for you.
