Besides transferring data faster, are the gigabit ports in the DIR-655 also used for long cables? I have a bridged router connected by a 30-m cable, and the signal is fine if I use the DIR-655 but not if I use a router or switch with no gigabit ports.
Also is there a threshold for the number of devices connected to the DIR-655? Sometimes I can no longer access Facebook or Google using any device (although I can access other sites and DL fine), and I have something like ten devices connected (seven workstations, two media players, one security camera), although not all are running or access the 'net at the same time. I have a spare D-Link DES-1016D switch. Will transferring several of the cables to that help?
