Slower performance with 1.31
« on: May 16, 2009, 09:11:55 AM »

I recently updated my firmware to 1.31 NA from 1.11 and I'm noticing much slower performance when playing online games. For example, Warcraft III stutters a lot and pauses way too often.

I'm using the DWA-552 Adaptor (1.30 drivers) and the settings on my router (A3) are:
 - factory settings
 - WEP2 AES protection,
 - mode 802.11n only, CH11
 - channel width is auto 20/40 MHz.

I'm using Windows Zero Configuration and every so often, my signal strength varies from Low to Good 2-3 Bars (sometimes it varies very frequently). I also tried the 4.10 drivers for my DWA-552, but I find the 1.30 drivers are more stable.

This was never an issue when I had 1.11 firmware. I'm also noticing in my D-Link webpage wireless status that the signal (%) is 35-50. When I had 1.11, it was always 70% - 80 %. I don't know what's going on.

I should have taken the "This firmware does not allow downgrading" warning much more seriously than what I had initially thought. But is there anyway I can fix this? or decrease these stutters and pauses? any help or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Try this.  The channel your router uses probably changed.  Use the info in the link to determine the least used channel range for you and disable "Auto Channel" in Manual Wireless Setup.

Download netstumbler to you notebook and run it.  This will display all the available access points and what channel they are on, the signal strength, noise, etc...
Look for the channel with no access points, and if all channels are taken choose the channel with in which the neighbooring access point is weakest.

Wow, that program in the link is really good. I switched to channel 1 and I'm getting a better signal. It's now less laggy when I play Warcraft (although not good as when I had firmware 1.11) but it's a definite step up when I had it on channel 11. Thanks for sending me that link :).
