VPN disconnection
« on: September 03, 2013, 01:30:35 AM »

Hi everyone,

i recently got a new ISP with modem/router. I setup this in bridge mode and got a D-Link 645 behind it as router.

It not working bad but when i try to connect to my work VPN, the vpn connection timeout after a few minutes ( like 2-3minutes)

I tried many solution i could find on the net but none worked :(

Here is some informations :

- I'm using the latest firmware available : 1.04 Fri 14 Jun 2013
- The VPN connection is stable if i connect my computer directly to my modem

If anyone could help me to debug this it would be nice

        Link>
Welcome!
  • What region are you located?
  • Are you wired or wireless connected to the router?
  • Has a Factory Reset been performed?
  • Was a Factory Reset performed before and after any firmware updates?
  • Was the router working before any firmware updates?

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
  • What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
  • What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?
  • What ISP Modem service link speeds UP and Down do you have?
  • Check ISP MTU requirements, Cable is usually 1500, DSL is around 1492 down to 1472. Call the ISP and ask. Link>Checking MTU Values
  • For DSL/PPPoE connections on the router, ensure that "Always ON" option is enabled.

Router and Wired Configurations
Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1. Use IE, Opera or FF to manage the router.
  • Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options, Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
  • Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual or under Setup/PARENTAL CONTROL/Set to>None: Static IP or Obtain Automatically From ISP.
  • Enable Use Unicasting (compatibility for some ISP DHCP Servers) under Setup/Internet/Manual.
  • Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking. Link>Finding Faster DNS Addresses using Name Bench
  • Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking. This ensures each devices gets its own IP address when turned on and connected, eliminates IP address conflicts and helps in troubleshooting.
  • Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
  • If IPv6 is an option on the router, select Local Connection Only or Disable IPv6 options under Setup/IPv6.
  • Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall. Enable or Disable SPI to test.
  • Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking. Disable uPnP for testing Port Forwarding rules. Enable IPv6 Multi-cast Streaming for routers that have a Media Server option. Disable IPv6 Multi-cast Streaming if IPv6 or Media Server is not being used.
  • Turn off WISH, and WPS under Advanced.
  • WAN Port Speed set to Auto or specific speed? Some newer ISP modems support 1000Mb so manually setting to Gb speeds can be supported by the router. Advanced/Advanced Networking/WAN Port Speed
  • Set current Time Zone, Date and Time. Use an NTP Server feature. Tools/Time.

If this is your ISP modem, this is probably a Gateway modem:
http://www.netgear.com/service-provider/products/routers-and-gateways/cable-gateways/CG3700EMR.aspx#
  • If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems: Link>Double NAT and How NAT Works. To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged. If the modem can't be bridged then see if the modem has a DMZ option and input the IP address the router gets from the modem and put that into the modems DMZ.
  • Check ISP MTU requirements, Cable is usually 1500, DSL is around 1492 down to 1472. Call the ISP and ask. Link>Checking MTU Values

Did you disable all ALGs accept for IPSEC and test the VPN?
Is DNS Relay ON or OFF?

Hi,

sorry for delay.

The modem is correctly bridged, and i have checked the MTU and 1500 is fine and the dns relay is enabled

I really thinks it has to do with a time value somewhere because the connection drop always between 1min40 and 2min

Do you know where i can find a detailled log of what happen on the router ?

I may have got it fixed, i still don't know how exactly, in the end i tryed several fw, none worked.

As last testing attempt, i did used my mobile as a usb - wifi router to connect my computer to the router in wifi and it worked well.

Then i tryed to plug my computer in the modem directly ( it was behind a small switch ) and it worked aswell so i tought the switch was faulty but when i plugged my computer back to the switch it was working!

if u don't have news from me in the next days that mean things are fixed but sadly i don't know how.

Look in the logs under Status/Logs.

So what FW are you on right now? What versions did you try?

How did you use your mobile as a USB?  ??? Can you explain a bit further? We would like to know.

Well, with my mobile ( galaxy s3 ) i have the option to use it as usb modem when it's pluged into the computer :

For the fw, i'm now back on the latest after checking if it was working on all ( 1.01, 1.02, 1.03, 1.04 )

I still don't know what change from initial testing but the vpn keep working since.

So you are VPN'g thru your cell phone or the 645? This seems a bit confusing to me now.

ISP Modem>DIR-645>WiFI to Cell Phone>USB connection to PC?

For testing purpose only, i don't know what happenned but it worked.

Here is what i did step by step :

- Disable network adapter
- Plugin cellphone as usb modem
- Try vpn trought 3g network -> vpn work fine
- Enable wifi of my cell phone to get my cell phone connected to my router internet -> vpn work fine ( so at that state is was like u said ISP > DIR-645->cellphone > pc )
- Remove my phone from the pc, plug my computer directly into the router ( my pc was behind a little switch ) -> vpn work
- Plug my pc back to the switch and the switch to the router -> vpn work.

I don't know what magic came into action but it's now working without vpn drop since 2 hours.

Wow thats crazy.

So if you remove the little switch and plug the PC directly into the back of the 645 router, does it still work then?

Can you provide us with some client VPN server information if possible? What brand or kind of VPN you were trying to use or connect too? This would be very helpful in D-Links review of this issue.

Please let us know.

Any chance you can get the remote side of the VPN information? D-Link is looking into this and needs any more information that you can get from the remote VPN if possible. So far there hasn't been any issues from what they say with this. Also see if you can check the remote side, ask an admin to check connection logs or see if they can provide any help on this.

Have you tried to disable DNS relay and manually enter in DNS addresses under Setup/Internet/Manual?
