Hello, I have recently purchased a D-Link N750 DIR-836L cloud router and have it hooked up to a Zoom 343 Mbps DOCSIS 3.0 (model 5341-00-03j)

Me and my roommates just moved into a house and purchased Comcast Xfinity Blast internet service 50mbs/15mbs. We have 5 computers in one room at all times, and a variable 5+ phone devices, 3 laptops, and 3 consoles that can connect to the internet.

We are having issues in which one person will start downloading something, for example, updating an online game, at 2 mbps, and then everyone in the entire household drops to under 1mbs down speed, and over 1000 ping spikes on and off.

Here are my speed tests when 1 person is downloading a game (Planetside 2):

I've done speedtests last week with just 3 computers up and running on the internet and I received speeds up to 35 mbps d/l and 14 mpbs u/l, but now they seem to be down.

But our biggest issue is that we cannot figure out how to use the QoS engine properly and cannot find any other methods of limiting the amount of bandwidth that is used per computer. Every time we turn on the QoS engine on our router, we receive no internet connectivity at all. I've tried a few different rules and just can't seem to get it working. I did notice on the DIR-600L there was a feature called "Traffic Control" that looks like EXACTLY what we need, but it's not in my newer DIR-836L. We really need something like this because we cannot properly play any online games while anyone is streaming, downloading, or doing just.. anything online!

 I'm not sure why this is but I would appreciate any help, thanks!

Thank you for the quick reply, I will go through this when I get home from work. I apologize for the misplaced topic, did not see that 836L inquiries went in the 826L forum.

And for the sake of asking stupid questions, I can follow this guide using multiple PCs instead of multiple Xboxes, correct?

No worries.

Yes, just follow the example of the Other Devices seen in the sticky. You can create multiple rules for each device or a group of devices or multiple groups if needed.

It won't limit bandwidth however it will ensure that those with higher priorities will get best access while still giving others with lower priorities access. A good balance once in place.

I got the QoS running pretty smoothly but ran into a couple issues. After creating new rules for each device, I set all of their priorities to 20, and used the information from the "Single Computer/Device" from that FAQ.

We began to test our internet connections and play some online games among 3 computers, and the router completely dropped the internet connection for everyone on 2 separate occasions (this did not happen before) and a router reboot is required. Also, I noticed that if someone begins downloading something, we get the same lag in our respective online games.

The game in question was League of Legends, so I looked up ports for League and make a new rule for UPD ports 5000-5500 and set the priority to 15. Unfortunately, this did not change anything at all, and the lag remained in our online games while people downloaded other things.

So I guess now my issues are:

1. why is it that my internet connection is being periodically lost from my router while QoS Engine is enabled?

and

2. what sort of rules can I establish to avoid lag for certain online games, or put all downloads on priority after everything else?

For the low priority devices, I would use 128 as a beginning value and work your way towards 200.

For the gaming devices, I would start at 50 and work your way to 10 or even 1.

Normal priorities we've found are at 128, anything above that is higher.

You can't set all priorities at 20 and is probably why your seeing some bad behavior

Awesome, that will hopefully solve any problems that laptops and other devices cause, I will edit the priorities when I get home from work today!

I just worry about one thing still: 5 of the computers are specifically for gaming/download/streaming (us streaming, not watching streams) and it's safe to say all of us as roommates would like to share priorities among our gaming PCs. Is there a way around this? Currently we just tell everyone to only download things overnight, which works, but it would be nice to have an alternative.

It gets harder for setting up QoS for specific apps versus devices. Since you have a mix of stuff you do that are similar, you have to think of what takes priority on what device vs apps. If you could set a specific PC to download or stream only then you can separate that PC from the other Gaming PCs and those would of course demand more priority over the downloading and streaming PC.

Another thing to look at as well, your ISP Speed connection pipe. Do you think handling all gaming and downloading with a low ISP connection speeds could also impact your bandwidth needs? You might consider faster DL pipe as well.

Over all you'll still need to figure out what is more important, gaming or downloading and create rules appropriately and you'll probably still need to manage when downloads are going to happen unless you can specify a PC to do just that and no gaming.
