DIR 655 problem
« on: September 13, 2013, 06:54:34 PM »

Hi all,

I've browsed through and searched the forums for a thread that had something similar to what I was having but the solutions didn't work for me. Hence I'm posting a new one in hopes that someone could help me.

My DIR 655 basically don't provide an IP address (if that makes sense). It powers on though, complete with all of the lights.

The last "working state" was I was able to connect to the router wirelessly but didn't have an internet connection - so I figured, it must've been the DSL modem - but it wasn't; I was successful in getting a connection from the WAN port of my modem directly to my laptop's LAN port and my desktop's LAN port too.

So I tried to power cycle the router about five times (which normally works - for just one time) and still no connection. I figured that the router might need a "cold/hard" reset (the 30/30/30 process) - which I've tried twice already and still am not able to access the Dlink admin (default is 192.168.0.1 right?).

Tried going to "cmd" and did the ipconfig thing and there's no result on the "Default Gateway" line. When I connect a LAN cable to my laptop, the icon on the lower right "spins" for about a minute and ends up with the "yellow warning" sign.

I'm on hardware version B1 with the default firmware 2.00 - I'm not really sure if I had updated the firmware of this router way back when I bought it (which is about 2 years ago now).

Any help please?

You've probably disabled DHCP. You can go into your computer's network settings and set the IPv4 address manually (Gateway, Subnet, and Computer IP) to see if you can connect to your router that way.

This method didn't work unfortunately

Ok, keep us posted on any results. Good Luck.

Unfortunately none of the above suggestions worked :(

I've tried the 30/30/30 reset about five times again earlier too and still nothing.
I've tried manually changing the IPv4 settings - no dice

It's totally weird.

Here's a recap:
1.) There's power in the unit.
2.) All the lights are lit properly.
3.) All the LAN ports light up when I connect a cable to my laptop (I shouldn't be connecting it to my WAN port right? - WAN to my laptop's LAN?)
4.) Resetting it doesn't really do anything ...

Do I just dump this piece-o-sh*t in the bin? I'm thinking going DD-WRT but I can't even access the admin page (and that this isn't supported by DD-WRT ... or so I've read)

Laptop should be connected to one of the LAN ports 1-4 in back, NOT the WAN port. Thats for the ISP Modem connection.

Correct, WRT or any 3rd party FW is not supported or has been developed for the 655.

What else should I do?

Or is the situation already hopeless? And should I already move on and forget about trying to repair my router?

Did you connect your laptop to the LAN ports 1-4 and then your ISP modem to the Internet (WAN) port on the back of the router?

Can you access the routers web page after the laptops connected at 192.168.0.1?

Yes, I've done this before and this is the original problem - that I can't access the routers web/admin page.

I recommend that you phone contact your regional D-Link support office. If you can't gain access to the routers page at all and the router is not working, it needs to be RMA'd back to D-Link for repair or replacement. This is beyond any help that we can provide here in the forums. Please use the phone method for more immediate help as email will not be able to help you.

Good Luck.
