I recently bought a DIR-868L and have set up a new Dynamic DNS host name on dlinkdns.com.  After entering the details on the Dynamic DNS page (under Tools) the status just says "Disconnected". Shouldn't it say "Connected"?

I've checked several times and I believe I've entered the correct host name, username and password.

The firmware version is 1.02.  Also I've configured the 868L as an access point (ie. disabled UPnP & DHCP)

Any help would be appreciated.

• What region are you located?
• Was a Factory Reset performed before and after any firmware updates?

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations

• What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
• What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?
• What ISP Modem service link speeds UP and Down do you have?
• Check ISP MTU requirements, Cable is usually 1500, DSL is around 1492 down to 1472. Call the ISP and ask. Link>Checking MTU Values
• For DSL/PPPoE connections on the router, ensure that "Always ON" option is enabled.

If your running the 868 in AP mode then DDNS will not work. DDNS depends on the WAN port being used and the 868L being the main host router.

Thanks.  I thought that might be the case.  Surely this is something that D-Link could resolve though.  My QNAP NAS has the ability to set up a Dynamic DNS and it has no WAN port and is not a router!

Have u setup DDNS on the main host router? If it is, the AP should pass this thru to connected devices.
This is probably something that DLink wont fix as its not a design flaw and does work as intended for this router when used as a router. Not in AP mode.

I do currently have a DDNS set up on my main router (not a dlink one). The DDNS is from DynDNS which I don't own. I was hoping to use a free dlinkddns.com one.

I would have thought there is an incentive for dlink to make this work in AP mode. Anything that locks you into their brand of router is good for them.

Why not use the 868L in main router mode then set up DDNS on it?

I personally don't see a need for any AP to have or operate DDNS. This would probably cause other connection problems and if the main host router lost connections with ISP services or goes bad, then your having to troubleshoot more to find the problems. Also having AP so more processing of data like this would probably impact performance. AP are only there to tunnel traffic from connected client devices to the main host router and out to the Internet. It's what Main host routers do and meat for, not APs. Let the main host router handle the DDNS and routing operations. Let the APs tunnel the traffic in which they are designed to do.

Hi FurryNutz,

Ideally I would like to set up my 868L as my main router and ditch my current one.  My main problem is that the cable modem is at one end of my house and if I put the 868L next to it I'll have little if any reception at the other end of my house.  What I have done is positioned the 868L around the centre of the house (there's a switch there). This gives me great reception for the entire house.

Correct me if I'm wrong by it wouldn't work as a router in this scenario as I need a direct connection from the modem to the router's WAN port.

Is there a LAN wired going from the ISP modem to this more central place by chance? Any chance of getting a LAN wired to this central place from the ISP modem?

The current configuration is:

ISP Modem -> Router -> Switch --- cable from study to central location ---> switch -> 868L

There's only one ethernet cable that runs from my study at one end of the house to the central location.

Is there enough cable length to remove the main host router and switch near the ISP modem and directly connect the ISP modem to the 868L in the central location and put the switch after the 868L. Then a possibility to run a LAN wired back to the study area if needed to a switch there?

You also might consider using some Power Line units as well.

The distance is too far to do that.  I think my only option would be to run a 2nd ethernet cable from the study to the central location (thru wall and ceiling).  This would cost money so its cheaper to just use the old router for the time being.

Likewise using Power Line units will cost money.

Ya, it's fairly cheap to run wire and not expensive. More time consuming installing it however wouldn't be that hard. I put my 868L online as a wired AP last nite. Sure works great with a 865L bridged to it.

I kind of have a similar set up. I have the ISP modem and a 24pt switch in the office at one end. I have 2 50ft LAN cables running to the central area which is the living room where the main host router is. The one 50ft cable connect between the ISP modem the main host router. The 2nd 50ft cable connects the main host router to the 24pt switch. I also have a switch in the living room as well for other devices. This works well for me.
