I just purchased a new 865l and attempting to set it up in bridge mode to act as a wireless extender.

Primary router: TomatoUSB with both 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz wireless - 192.168.1.1
DIR-865L : bridge mode at address 192.168.0.50 (fixed address ??)

I am able to connect to my main router with either 2.4GHz (channel 6) or my 5GHz (channel 149), but do not get access to my lan on main router. A laptop hardwired on the 865L lan port is unable to get a DHCP address from my main router.

On my main router, from the "Device List" I see a wireless connection with a MAC address of the 865L.
Do I need to modify anything on my main router since the 865L has a 192.168.0.50 address and my main router is on a different subnet (192.168.1.x)?

• Was a Factory Reset performed before and after any firmware updates?

Router and Wired Configurations

• Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the main host router. This ensures each devices gets its own IP address when turned on and connected, eliminates IP address conflicts and helps in troubleshooting.
• Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.

You need to change the 192.168.0.50 to 192.168.1.50 if your using .1.# pool addressing. I think you can change this on the 865L...Normally I use the default and haven't changed it to anything else.

Sometimes the 865L will have a 2ndary IP address besides the .50 I've notice. However my 865L is currently in bridge mode and connected to a xbox 360 and bridged to my DIR-827 and is working well. I would check the settings on the router to be sure it's allowed on the network, reserve IPs. If you didn't do a factory reset before and after applying the FW update, I recommend that you follow this process:

I was unable to change the ip address of 192.168.0.50 while in bridge mode . So I change my main router to the 192.168.0.x subnet.
It still will not work as expected.. status on Dlink shows connected but no traffic.

I played with it for a while and got it to work IF I disable the security on the main router . I normally have WPA2 Personal/AES set for wireless. I tried every combination of WEP,WPA,WPA2 with AES or TKIP. It will not work with any kind of encryption. As soon as I disable the security, everything works fine.

Could it be a restriction (or bug) while in bridge mode? I have no problems connecting to my main TomatoUSB router with my wireless devices (using WPA2 personal/aes).
I even downgraded the Dlink 865L firmware back to V1.03, but it did not change anything.
Maybe I need to contact Dlink support..

My 865L is currently connected in bridge mode using WPA2/AES only on my DIR-827 and DAP-1533. Possible there is a security incompatibility on the Tomato FW on your main host router. Can you try a different router as a test using OEM FW?

I got it to work with WPA2/AES and the problem was related to the password I was using.

Yesterday, when troubleshooting with WEP,WPA and WPA2 , I always used the same password. My password is 13 characters with the last 2 characters are dollar signs ($$).
If I keep my same password but remove the last two characters ($$) , it works fine.
I am not sure if it's a password length issue and/or something to do with the dollar sign in my password.
The shortened password now works for WEP,WPA and WPA2.

I would presume that it could be a special character problem. The PW should be able to handle 15 characters. Prior testing with a different DIR series model does 15 characters...including some special characters. I normally don't use that many for my applications so I might not see this. I can try the same thing when I get home and see if my 865L does the same thing with my DAP-1533 currently. I'll post back.

Would you PM me the original PW characters that you used so I can input this later today?

So ya, using your PW you PMd me yesterday with my 865L and having it connect to my DAP-1533 and DIR-827, the 826L would not connect. I looked at the WiFi status on the DAP and DIR to see if there was any connections. The status showed the MAC address and a slow speed connection however the IP address was Zeros. I looked at the WiFi status on the 865L and there was no connection and the LAN IP address was blank. So something about using the 2 special characters at the end for some reason doesn't like it.

Curious does the 865L work if you put one special character at the beginning and one at the end?
Do other special characters work in the same place?


I'll pass this along to D-Link for review.

Sorry for the bump but I'm having a similar issue: I followed the instructions in the manual by disabling UPnP and the DCHP server then I set my IP to 192.168.0.50 but now I can't connect to the 865L at all.

Are you using the 865L in wired AP mode or actual Briged mode?

If wired AP mode then follow this:
Turning a router into an AP.

Be sure that 192.68.0.50 isn't conflicting with any other device on your network that may be already using 192.168.0.50. Try 192.168.0.51.

For actual Bridge mode, use the bridge mode settings found under Internet/Manual. If you set bridge mode, then the 865L will be accessed at 192.168.0.50. However when you do this mode, you'll need to have a wired PC directly connected to the 865L and set a static IP address ON the PC, i.e. 192.168.0.49. Then you can access the 865L in bridge mode to get it configured to bridge to a main host WiFi router. After the 865L is successfully bridged to the main host router, the 865L may acquire a NEW IP address from the main host router. Look at the main host routers DCHP client table to see the new IP address. Use this new IP address to connect to the 865L while in normal bridge operation mode.
