Ios 7 keeps switching routers
« on: September 22, 2013, 10:15:53 AM »

I have been running 3    dir-655's  in my house due to lot's of rock walls and cinder block walls .
It has worked great. But now after the ios 7. Update my ipad's and iphones will switch to one of the routers on the other side of the house , even when i am sitting right next to a strong router.
Anybody having this issue? Any work arounds etc....

Link>Welcome!
  • What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
  • Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the routers web page under status.
  • What region are you located?
  • Was the router working before any iOS7 updates?

I have 2 rev A's and one rev B's ..
Firmware 1.34A
 The latest released
has been working fine for years, still works ok.
Problem is i have 3 routers and the ipads now change routers automatically , most of the time to the one with the weekest signal.
Before IOS7 your had to change routers on the ipad manually .

v1.37 is the latest for Rev A and v2.11 is the latest for Rev B

Wireless Configurations
Links>Wireless Installation Considerations and Managing Signal Congestion
  • Ensure the default (dlink) SSID name is the same if your using that application for all 3 WiFi.
  • What wireless modes are you using?
  • 2.4Ghz Routers only: Try single mode G or N or mixed G and N?
  • Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
  • Try setting a manual Channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear. Might manually set up each radio to 1, 6 and 11.
  • What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto TPIK and AES.
  • What wireless devices do you have connected?
  • Any cordless house phones?
  • Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use InSSIDer to find out. How many?
  • If you have any of these options, Try turning OFF or ON Short GI, WLAN Partition, HT 20/40 Co-exhistance and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Recommended settings are default. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.
  • Enable WMM Enable Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.
  • Try setting Medium or Low power output settings and test again Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Where is the Rev A placed in relation to the Rev B?

You can try to update FW if you wish after trying some of the suggestions. Please follow this:
FW Update Process

If this still happens, then you'll need to seek Apples support as this could be a iOS problem.

You don't have to... This seems to be a iOS behavior issue...

I have the cable modem plugged into dlink1
The dlink 2 and 3 are plugged into the dlink1 with wire to one of the four ports.
And i think on 2 and 3 i had to turn off DHCP ?

You don't need to use separate SSIDs if you have each 655 on a manual channel thats different. If you are using 3, then set one 655 on channel 1, the next one on 6 and the 3rd one on channel 11 keeping the same SSIDs. It's up to the connecting devices and depending on range and distances from each 655, where they will connect.

Turning a router into an AP.

Will setting the channels manually and using the same SSID for all 3 dir-655's
Make my wifi seemless ? Will my device just see one SSID ?
Also do i keep DHCP turned off the dlink 2 and 3 .
Thanks . I know there had to be a better way!!!

Yes if you use the separate manual channels. Yes, keep DHCP and all other features turned off listed in the list for 2 and 3 655.
